juniper

i slumped into my seat in first block. as usual, i was one of the first ones in class.

i really don't care for lingering in the hallways. i just want to get to my class to get away from so many people crowded in a narrow hall.

only a few seconds before the bell rang, billie sat down in her seat beside me. i saw that today, she was wearing a pair of jeans and a cropped top that had blue, white, and red stripes on it.

"hi, juniper," she greeted, like she does every morning, with a grin.

"hey," i mumbled.

i returned my attention back to my phone, and i continued to watch tiktok. out of the corner of my eye, i saw billie turn to face me.

"whatcha doing?" she quizzed.

i didn't respond. instead, i tried to finish watching the tiktok that i was watching. billie tried to lean forward to peek at what i was doing, but i held my hand up to stop her.

she then tried to move my hand, but i narrowed my eyes at her. "don't. i've told you not to touch me."

"my bad," she apologized as she held her hands up in surrender. "anyways... i'm bored. talk to me," she groaned.

"no."

she groaned again, and she let her head fall onto her desk. "i'm gonna die. i'm literally going to die, juniper. you have to talk to me!"

"no, i don't," i let out a puff of air. "and you're not going to die. you're just over dramatic."

she sat up as her jaw dropped. "i am not."

"you are," i argued. "now, shush. leave me alone."

her brows furrowed. "why?"

"because i said."

"well, maybe i don't—" she started, but she was cut off by the teacher getting everybody's attention. i turned away from billie to look up front.

"okay, so for the next two or so weeks, you'll all be working on a project, in groups of two," she announced. "and before you ask, no, you cannot pick your partner. i've already picked your partner for you."

i fucking hate group projects. i'd rather do that shit alone and just get it over with.

"you will not work on this project during class time; you are to do this out of class, on your own time. we will have our lessons, as normal, during class time."

you've got to be fucking kidding me.

"before i explain your project, let me read off everybody's partners," the teacher looked down at her clipboard, and she started to list off everybody's partners.

"juniper and billie," she listed before continuing on.

this just keeps getting worse and worse, huh?

i let my head fall onto my desk, while billie said "yo, hey, now you have to talk to me!" just by the tone of her voice, i knew that she was grinning.

i told her to "shut up," as the teacher started to explain the project. once she was done, she gave us time to discuss it with our partners.

"how about you just let me do it all?" i offered.

"what? no. we both have to do it," billie shook her head. "uh... do you want to do it at your house or mine?"

"and let you know where i live? no, thanks. i guess your house is fine," i muttered.

"okay, first off, that was a bit rude," she narrowed her eyes. "but yeah, that's cool. my family won't bother us or anything. i need your number though, so i can tell you what time to come over and to send you my address, and shit."

"we can't plan that shit during school?" i raised a brow.

"no. something might pop up or something; i can't tell you that it did if i don't have your number," she pointed out. "come on, juniper. it won't hurt you to give me your number."

i let out a sigh, and i reached my hands up to run them down my face. i then held my hand out. "give me your damn phone."

she grinned, and she pulled her phone out of her pocket. she unlocked it, clicked a few things, then handed her phone to me. i added my number, saved my contact as "juniper," then handed her phone back to her.

"only text me about the project," i narrowed my eyes.

"what about imessage games?" she made a face.

"no."

her brows furrowed. "okay, but what i just really want to text you?"

"too bad."

"rude," she huffed. "i'm not making any promises about not texting about shit other than the project. if i do, i'll probably just end up breaking it, and i don't want that."

"oh my god," i muttered, then let my head fall onto the desk again.

fuck this damn project and the teacher for making it a group project.

"we should start working on it after school, huh?" she raised a brow. "i'll text you my address and shit later."

"yeah, whatever," i mumbled.

"junie!" archer squealed as i walked inside.

"hi, baby," i grinned as i bent down and opened my arms for him. he crashed into them, and i hugged him closely before i picked him up.

"i miss you!" he got close to my face. "you can't go to school anymore!"

"i wish i didn't have to," i laughed. "trust me, i wouldn't go if i didn't have to."

"well, you don't have to anymore! i said so!" he huffed as his brows furrowed.

"mm... i don't think that's how that works," i shook my head.

"yes, it is!" he quickly nodded.

"nuh-uh," i chuckled. "okay, now... i have to leave again in a bit—"

"where are you going?" he cut me off with a frown.

"i've got to work on a project for school. i'm going over to my partner's house to work on it," i explained to him. before i could continue, he started talking again. he was still frowning.

"are you going to be gone long? i don't want you to leave," he pouted.

"i don't know how long i'll be over there," i said. "but i want to take you out to get ice cream before i leave. do you want to do that?"

his eyes and entire face lit up. "really?!" he gave a big, dimpled grin. "i want ice cream! please?"

"yeah, of course," i giggled. "let's go tell grandma that we're going there first, okay? and you can ask her if she wants some ice cream too."

"okay! let's go then!" he quickly wiggled out of my arms before he started to run off towards the back of the house.

i chuckled and i shook my head before i followed after him.
