Nina's pov

But perhaps this morning, something strange happened. As I sat thinking, I was in oblivion when someone walked behind me, pulled out of the seats and sat two seats away from me.

My eyes were intently fixed on my coffee, so I'd not notice.

I'd first thought it was one of the servants. But when I looked, it was Mark.

Before now and after the little quarrel we had, he always used to take his breakfast in his office or room or somewhere else in this edifice.

This was crazy! Lizzy was indirectly affecting me. How could I be happy just by seeing my son? Things were falling apart. And, for the third time this morning, I swore silently that she must be thrown out. My son needed a decent girl. A girl who'd be able to know her right from her left, yet contribute greatly so that we can hold up our heads in the assembly of our class. No wonder Mark behaved this way, obviously because I'd made the wrong choice at first.

And I was sorry.

"Good morning mum" Mark's deep but clear voice intones. He begins to munch on his pastry after saying this. A kind of smile is tilted on a corner of his lips while he gazes into the vacant space before him. Something inside seemed to give him joy. What would that be?

Having observed him thus far, I responded while gazing into the steamy hot tea. I tried as much to look stern. "Morning"

I begin to sense my fears were true once he begins to mumble something. He smiles and sighs, then turns in my direction. "How was your night?"

I raised my eyebrows, wondering what the problem was. But he seemed not to have noticed my scepticism.

Damn! My tea begins to twirl as I pour more milk into it. It was rather impulsive, the reason being that Mark really must have had it with Lizzy. What must have made him so happy this morning that he even asked about how my sleep was. Something that had not happened for quite some time! I felt saddened, deep down I was forlorn. Had she already had her way in? Mark would surely marry her.

But I remember Susan's words and feel a kind of weak reassurance. Nothing was going to stop me from worrying too much now. I liven my expression once I catch him stealing a glance in my direction.

"Mmmh, mmh. My night was good. What happened, it's been a long we spoke this way. And it's been a long I saw you this happy." I sip from the mug and try to play along.

Unfortunately, a hostile expression left his forehead furrowed in a frown, like he remembered what had happened some weeks ago. I took in his features while looking in his direction, it felt as if we'd last seen a year ago. I hadn't realized how much I missed him. I continued to watch him as he poured himself a fresh cup, ignoring me. I only scoff.
"Was good" he mumbled while gazing into the mug, his jovial expression still lingering on a corner of his face.

"Good to see you both together again, what's happening?" my husband intones as he strides across the room from the doorway. His smile is barely perceptible as his moustaches are thick and overgrown. Neither of us speaks. His smile fades as he sits to have his breakfast. "My bad, maybe I'd been too quick to judge. Only God knows what's wrong with you too"

"Morning father" Mark greets, but he's ignored.

"Anyway, I received bad news regarding the knights this morning. Their daughter… I can't even remember her name. The one who came here. You know her right?"

"Do you mean Janice?" I corrected, becoming apprehensive.

"Yes. She called this morning and I'll be off to see her father once I'm done here. He's had a cardiac arrest. How bad. Maybe you should come along as well"

I gasped, feeling so sorry for his misfortune. I tried to sound as concerned as possible. "So sorry to hear that. When did that happen?" I asked my husband.

"At night, yesterday. They'd rush him to the hospital. Thankfully enough, he's getting better"

"But he looks well. He has never complained about his heart. Well, I suppose that's natural considering his age and things that'd been happening to him lately. He always reads shit into things. Always worried. Poor man, I pray he recovers from all of this. It's so sad hearing this"

"I think it's about his son. The one who was murdered last month. Why shouldn't he worry? But of course, you know, it's detrimental to his health. I pray he survives this." Having mentioned this, he looked anxious instantly.

"I haven't heard anything about Janice being married. Have you?" he continued, staring straight at me.

"No. I should be the one asking. But she doesn't even seem to feel it, I wonder what she's also going through." I laughed "Are you not going to say anything, Mark?"

Noble had taken off his coat. He watched Mark as he sat there silently, not wanting to say anything.

"Ok, I have nothing to say" he finally announced and rolled his eyes.

"Then I'm going to ask about this nice, pretty woman who you came to the ball with. Such a sweet pea. I'm surprised you've not made your intentions known to me. How bad of you. Who is she and what drives you towards her?"

I wasn't fond of this. A spark of liveliness graced his eyes when the Noble patronizingly asked him about Lizzy. He cleared his throat to begin when I interrupted.

"Especially what-"

"Allow him, woman!"My husband interrupted. I roll my eyes, noting from the corner of my eyes that Mark gazed at me with hostility. "You can ask your questions when he is done, please" my husband snapped at her feigning annoyance. I gave him a sulking look and a little eye battle ensured between us. I pulled up and pegged him on his lips and  Mark mentally gagged . They both laughed at me and I smilled.
