"This....This is...This is all. YOUR. FAULT." Fitz said angrily as tears slipped down his chiseled face. Keefe looked up to see Fitz glaring at him. He wasn't surprised. In fact, this is exactly what he expected to come from Fitz. Keefe heard someone give a shaky breath. He turned his head to a crying trembling Dex.

" This is my fault. Sophie is dead because of me. She hit her panic switch and I was with my dad at the shop. I hurried to gather everyone and form a plan. I wanted to be ready this time. I didn't want to roll with it. I wanted something solid. We had agreed to be stealth. And that Biana would vanish and sneak attack whoever was attacking. But the plan fell apart when we saw the door broken in, and the windows crushed. Then we found Grady and Edaline. Wait.... We have to tell them." Dex realized.

" We'll worry about that later." Tam said in a crackly voice.

" One step at a time." Linh agreed.

" This is not your fault Dex." Keefe said. He risked that many more words to say to his friend.

" Yeah Dex. Sophie isn't around to heal broken minds anymore. So I'd think carefully if I were you." Fitz spat. Everyone was in silent awe of what Fitz had just said. But he didn't stop there.

" Also Keefe, tell me, how did you know Sophie was here? Did SHE tell you?!" Fitz yelled as he pointed to the still sleeping Lady Gisela. Keefe didn't want to speak. What he really wanted was to disappear in Sophie's void forever.

" Answer. Me. NOW." Fitz's voice dripped with venom. Keefe still didn't talk. He couldn't bring himself to. He felt so numb. So dull. So... broken. Keefe pointed to his own head. Fitz nodded.

So she did tell you that Sophie was here. Fitz's mental voice filled Keefe's mind.

I didn't say that. Keefe answered. Fitz looked ready to pummel him, or worse. So Keefe kept talking.

When I was leaving Elwin's place. I wrote Sophie a letter. I told her to forget me.. That i was running away, for her. I went to Havenfield. I was putting the letter on her bed when Grady found me. Long story short... He gave me an Imparter for emergencies only. And today, well. Today was an emergency. He hailed me and I came as quickly as I could. But I was too late. While Keefe was telling Fitz, Fitz was saying the words aloud to the room. Now all of his friends stayed silent. Fitz looked ready to explode.

" If you hadn't left the Lost Cities, running from your evil mommy, NONE of this would've happened!!" Fitz yelled. Keefe flinched. He traced his finger over Sophie's blond hair. Dex looked at Keefe with unexplainable eyes. Biana was frozen, like she always does when she's in shock. Linh sobbed and Tam held her, his eyes leaking with tears of his own. The Collective looked like they were having a telepathic conversation with Mr.Forkle. And Keefe's eyes wouldn't stop welling up.

Keefe's world was Sophie. Now that world was gone. And maybe Fitz was right. It's Keefe's fault that the Neverseen found her. Keefe had vowed that he would protect Sophie. He had failed. Keefe felt something in his head crack. There wasn't any pain. He kept thinking. So many things that happened had been Keefe's fault. The castle at the peace summit. HIS fault. If he'd never joined the Neverseen, maybe Sophie would still... be.. Alive. Keefe felt so much guilt and shame. He let it cloud his mind. He knew his mind was breaking, he let it.

He deserved it.

Instead of passing out, he felt an awakening. Keefe had let Fitz yell at Sophie too many times. Keefe had also been bullied by Fitz a few times. It was time for some payback. One last tear ran down Keefe's face as he ripped his eyes open and glared at Fitz, who's mind had still been connected with Keefe's, and was trying to stop him from making a decision he'd regret.
