But maybe if I had been stronger

But maybe if I had been stronger. Maybe if I had been more aware of my surroundings. Maybe if I had just listened they would all still be here with me.

What did I do in my past life that left me in such a fucked up world now. What did I do that I now have to pay the price for? And it's not just me but the people around me.

If only I was stronger. I could have protected them all. No one would have died. No one needed to died.

But they didn't and it was all my fucking fault.

She was a complete utter mess.

This wasn't the women I knew. Yet it was and it broke my heart. What had happened?

Her hair was that equivalent to a birds or rat nest, that settled into a shape of a bun. Half her hair wasn't even tied up and just fell down along her shoulders and back. Her clothes looked and smelled disgusting, as if she had worn them for weeks, and to be honest, she probably had. Though it scared me with the blood patches I could see hidden underneath all the dirt. Was she hurt? And her face. She was no longer tan but as white as a sheet, like she never in her life had stepped foot out side, let alone seen the sun. Her face had hollowed out, likely due to lack of food and water. Deep, dark eye bags was one of the most obvious and most notably thing that could be seen among the other characters on her face. She looked dead, like a living corps.

She wasn't looking at me though, nor made a move to when I took a step closer, piece of glass crunching under my foot. It was small, slow step towards Alice. I couldn't scare her. She looked as if she had enough pain and fear for anyones entire lifetime.

Slowly I took another and another and another after that, until I finally reached her. Crouching down so I was level with her, I gently took her hand that rested in her lap in mine. I instantly wanted to retract my hand once I felt how cold hers was, but I held firmly, hoping some of my warmth would help.

"Alice," I spoken softly, barely audible with how quiet I spoke.

No reaction.

"Alice?"

Again, no reaction.

I sighed, "Alice, can you please tell me what happened?" I question her, using the same quiet, soft tone.

I could hear the thundering steps of her family outside the room. Shit. I'm running out of time.

Panicking, I give Alice's hand a small reassuring squeeze, "Please, Alice. Please let me help you. Can you do that for me?" I asked, same tone but this time with more urgency.

I looked back at the door. The footsteps where getting louder by the second and which each second was less time I had. No, no, no, no, no, just little longer.

"Okay"

It was barely audible but I heard. My head whipped to face Alice again and my blood rain cold. Her eyes where dead. Nothing. Completely emotionless. And I mean so where mine but not like this. I trained to show no emotion, to hide it all away behind a mask. A fake reality. But not hers. You could see it. She had lost all hope. She had lost all her emotions. They were so blank and ... dead.

She was simply just here. Existing.

I was getting Alice out of here.

No. I can't. Not yet at least.

Soon. Alice needs me now though.

I gave Alice a small smile.

"Thank you," I whispered, "I'll be back soon, ok? And then I'll help you."

She just nodded her head softly. I felt my heart squeeze in my chest.

It's ok. It's going to be ok. She is going to be ok.

The door nob rattled and I frantically look around for an escape or somewhere to hide.

The window.

It reminded me of the night at the fight club. Where I helped Alice. When she tried to run away from me. Twice. Successful the second time.

Looking back at her I memorised her features. Even in such state she looked beautiful.

"I promise I'll come back to you." And for a split second, I saw something. Maybe it was my imagination. Maybe it was the fact I was dying to see something but for a split second I saw it.

Hope.
