SPENCER LAYED HERSELF ON THE COUNTER of the Family Video store, her legs kneeled upwards and her arms swinging off either side, waiting for Steve to get off work to drive her to Chrissy’s. She hadn’t got any sleep last night, she didn’t know if that was because she was just going through another night of insomnia or she was just scared of what her dreams would turn out to be. Dreams is the wrong word, nightmares are more accurate. To be fair, her mind had many different options to scare her with. Maybe she would have a nightmare about Max, the constant words of their conversation from yesterday running through her mind, or possibly she would have a nightmare of that deep, gravelly voice from the Byers’ house or the woods.

She had decided there was no point to even think about it because it wasn’t like she could stop them anymore. If she went to sleep – and that was a big if – it would be intruded by dark shadows, Billy’s death or her skin burning, blood boiling, fireworks in her eyes. So she decided to not even try and sleep. That was now beginning to be a task as she laid her head weirdly comfortably on a stack of tapes.

Since her cheerleading uniform was now completely out of order until she could find a way to get that very noticeable blood stain off, she was lucky that Steve never did the washing at the house otherwise she would be in a whole lot of trouble. So, right now, Spencer was left with some of the only clothes she had left, and she was not happy about them. It was a jean jacket, one from the previous summer and the stitching on the left shoulder just highlighted the remains of another blood stain. At this rate, she was going to ruin all the clothes she owned by the end of the year.
