"Okay! Let's try that again. On 3! One. Two. THREE!!!"
At Sirpa's signal, I cast the spell I had recently started practicing. Using Gravity Magic, I crushed several dense orbs of ice I had created through a combination of Ice and Water magic, the latter I had been aided in honing by our home's Water Spirit, Nereid.
Honestly, when Sirpa asked her to give me advice (which I wasn't even looking for at the time), I was expecting her to scoff at the idea and leave, but instead she went along with it, no questions asked.
But, though her advice wasn't something I was actively searching for, it did help me some. I had practically mastered Water Magic, and was on the verge of nailing Ice down, but Sirpa figured that I practice Gravity Magic inbetween.
With the ice crushed by magic-induced gravity and converted to a fine powder carried off by the wind, Sirpa called for a break. That break included sitting under the tree situated in the backyard.
"So, Radriel, have you heard of Compound Magic?"
I had read about it several times.
"Yeah. Compounding two or more magics to create a spell that's on a much larger scale than the original types. What about it?"
"Well, I was thinking that we could try it out. I mean, you're doing great now, but if you were to step into Compound Magic your progress rate would go through the roof~!"
He is right. Several years of experimentation has taught me that experience is the best teacher in cases like these. So...
"Alright. What should I try first?"
The look of glee plastered on Sirpa's face was something I'd grown accustomed to, despite it typically meaning that he's got something up his sleeve...
"Well, for starters we're gonna need a much larger practice area~"
...Huh?
.
"...A trip to the forest..."
Sirpa had suggested that I go out to the forest to start my training in Compound Magic, so as not to damage any of the surrounding buildings, but to do that, I needed Aria's approval first.
"I''m not sure how safe of an idea that is, Elle. They're rare but there are still hostile monsters all over the forest..."
"I know, but think about it like this: I want to start using my magic on a larger scale, and to do that I have to be away from residential areas. Plus, weren't you planning on taking me out there sooner or later?"
"I meant that more as a walk around the borders of the Republic... Not so much venturing into the wilderness..."
"I think I have a solution."
Nereid, who had been out of sight for the past few hours, appeared behind Aria. I guess she wasn't manifested today, for whatever reason.
"Aria, if I remember correctly there's a program for young mages set in place by the council."
"Oh, right! I'd totally forgotten about that!"
Aria's attention circled back to me.
"You see Elle, there's a program here in Ulgrassia that helps people to better their spiritual magic. The conditions for entering are mostly just being contracted with a spirit, and so I was planning to have you enter when you were 10, but since you've managed to push past the line and make your contract early, they may just let you in!"
So in other words, it's a school that mainly focuses on Spiritual Magic. I suppose having some form of a curriculum in a civilization where spirits are mainstream would make sense.
