JJ'S SHOULDERS SAGGED AS HE SAT DOWN OPPOSITE HER, ONE KNEE BOUNCING RESTLESSLY.

"I wanted to talk to you," he started, his voice sounding lost.

"You don't have to," Lucy answered. She knew she sounded tired. She was tired. She felt like they kept running into the same problem, kept arguing more for the sake of it than anything else, and it was exhausting. She would gladly never see him again if it meant that she could go back to getting full nights of sleep, without picturing his blood on a car window or his eyes on hers.

That might have been a lie.

"Are you really okay?" Lucy spoke first. JJ dropped his head, blond hair hanging free.

          "Next question, your honour."

"JJ." She said his name quietly, and finally he looked at her.

"What do you think?" Lucy shook her head, still holding eye contact. She felt as though she couldn't look anywhere else. "You don't have to act like you care, princess. You've gotta go get ready for the ball." He bowed dramatically.

"JJ, come on." She repeated his name like a plea.

"What?" His eyes fixed on hers once more, and there was anger there. "Ask me what you really want to ask me. C'mon." Lucy sighed.

"Why wouldn't you take my help?"

"And there it is." He laughed without humour, stretching his arms out behind him in a demonstration of fake calm. "I didn't want it."

"Wanting it and needing it are two different things. You know that. I told you that."

"Fine, then, I didn't need it. Will that help you sleep at night?"

          "No."

"Helps me just fine." Lucy rolled her eyes. "Besides," he started again, "Why are you acting like 'help' and 'money' are the same thing?"

"In that situation, I'd argue that they were."

          "No."

          "Elaborate."

          "Nope."

"JJ, please." This time, when she said his name, she said it louder. "We need to talk about it." She didn't know why she felt such unrest at the thought of this situation going unspoken between them, but Lucy knew for a fact she needed to air it before she exploded.
