Interlude

It was so strange, to look at the world she had once found so much joy in, and see it as a scary, untrustworthy entity, filled with equally untrustworthy people that could creep in and snatch her away if she didn't pay enough attention, like the monsters that children believed to be hiding under their beds.

Each time a doctor, nurse, therapist, or anyone else entered her hospital room, her heartrate and breathing picked up, and she curled into herself, eyes wide and unblinking as she watched their every movement.

What if they did something when she blinked? What if they gave her the wrong medication, or something to put her to sleep, leaving her vulnerable to whatever sinister plans they concocted?

She'd be damned before she allowed herself to be a victim to another person's carelessness or evil intentions.

Never, ever again.
