8. Names (Part 2)

"B-Bianca?" Nico stammers.

"Mhm." You say slowly, beginning to sense that the name had triggered something inside of Nico. "I thought it was a nice name, but I guess if you're opposed to it, we can choose something else." You say stiffly.

"No, it's not that. I just- it just reminded me of someone." Nico sits up on the bed, propped up by the pillows. "She was really important to me."

You pause. "Who? Nico, you can tell me. I'll understand. Unless you had a girlfriend named Bianca that I didn't know about?" You ask, slightly miffed.

Nico chooses to ignore that comment and instead turns away. His jaw tightens, and his clenched fists turn white. An old wound reopens inside of him.

"Bianca was the name of my biological sister."

"Oh." You say, surprised. Nico had never mentioned much about his mortal family. You knew about Hazel, but that was only because of a phone call from her on Nico's birthday. In fact, he didn't really talk much about his life at all. You frown, a little uncomfortable at your lack of communication. "I guess it would be kind of confusing to have two Biancas in the family. Do you visit her often?" You ask, more than a little irritated that Nico had kept this from you.

"I used to."

"Oh."

"She's dead." Nico's fists loosen, and his eyes become glassy with unshed tears.

You suddenly feel like an insensitive jerk.

"Oh, Nico." You mumble, setting down your laptop and pulling him closer to you. "I'm so sorry." He buries his face in your neck, fat, salty tears dripping onto your pajamas.

"She was so amazing, and she didn't deserve to die. And I tried, I really did, to be the best brother I could've been to her, and I even tried to bring her back from the Underworld!" Nico cries, clutching your shirt. You rub his back soothingly.

"Hey. It's alright. You did your best. What happened?" You ask, kissing him gently. He quickly wipes away his tears and straightens.

"She tried for rebirth." He says with a shuddering breath. He looks at you, his vulnerable face making you want to kiss him again. And you do.

"Nico, I don't know what to say. But think of it this way. She's probably way happier here, in the mortal world, with opportunities that she didn't have in her previous life. And it's probably much better than being cooped up in the Underworld. And you may not recognize her, and she may be halfway across the world for all you know, but that was her choice. And she'll always be here in this world, watching over you. And she'll always love you, even if she doesn't know it."

Silence. You start to feel a bit worried.

"You're right." Nico says finally, exhaling. You relax. "Hades always said she'd be here as long as we remember her."

Nico offers you a small smile. "I think Bianca di Angelo would be a perfect name for our child." He kisses you softly, and you move your lips against his.
