[13 October 1999]
A young girl chewed on her lower lip nervously as she carried her camcorder around. She was part of her school's Filmography Club and was tasked by the club's president to interview students on various topics. Being shy surely did not help her in this situation.
"Hi," Y/N whispered to her camcorder. In other students' eyes, she may have looked stupid, but she liked to capture memories. There wasn't much time left until the new decade, so she figured she could portray her high school life so that she could look at it fondly when she was older.
"I'm supposed to be interviewing my peers, but I can't find anyone," Y/N spoke with a calm tone, the camera cushioned on the crook of her neck. "Maybe I should go out to the courtyard and-"
Y/N's excitable whispering was interrupted as she slammed face-first into the chest of a student. Her camcorder flew out of her hands, and the footage briefly ended as the lens was shattered.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, are you okay?" A worried voice asked her, helping Y/N to her feet.
Y/N looked glumly at the shattered camcorder, then returned her gaze to meet her eyes with a slightly older boy's gentle gaze.
"I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going," He stuttered nervously, scratching the back of his nape. "I'm sorry for breaking your camera. I can buy you a new one."
Y/N sheepishly smiled, dismissing the boy's worries. "No, it's okay. It'd be too expensive," Y/N forced a smile. She pitied the boy for feeling overbearing guilt for breaking something he didn't own.
Making conversation with this boy was difficult for poor Y/N. He was so persistent.
"No really, I insist. It was my fault it broke anyway..." He stated guiltily, sheepishly looking to the side.
Y/N sighed, hesitantly agreeing to the boy's pleas. At least she didn't have to cover the expensive fee that the school charged for damaging school equipment.
The boy reached for the broken camera, carefully minding the broken shards on the sleek tiled floors. Y/N followed him like a lost puppy as they approached the disciplinary office to explain Y/N's unfortunate situation.
"I never got your name," Y/N spoke up hesitantly, her stomach knotted with nervousness. Breaking the ice was very difficult, especially in a situation where a boy breaks your camera.
"Ah," He smiled shyly looking down at her. "Yang Jeongin. Just call me Jeongin."
Yang Jeongin. Y/N recognized his name but could never pair it with his face. They were in the same grade, but not in the same class. She knew that he was in their school's Glee Club, but that was all she was aware of the mysterious boy.
"L/N Y/N," Was all that Y/N could reply with before the conversation ended, the awkward silence occasionally being interrupted by the sound of their footsteps.
The pair eventually arrived at the discipline office, entering. Y/N's head hung low as she expected a long lecture from their principal, and she was correct. The principal berated the pair, but his hurtful words were aimed at Jeongin, as he took responsibility for breaking the camera.
The air was thick with tension as the two exited the office. Y/N looked down at her feet, unsure of how to apologize for creating a world of trouble for him.
"Um..." Y/N mumbled, attempting to voice her thoughts to him. "You didn't have to go through all that trouble for my camera."
"It's no worries," Jeongin chuckled, his laugh seemingly contagious. "It's the least I could do."
Y/N tugged on the sleeve of her uniform shyly, staring down at her Mary Jane shoes. Again, she was at a loss for words. She just didn't know how to talk to boys, she supposed.
"Well, I..." Y/N croaked. "Is there anything I could do in exchange for you? You went through so much for me over a camera."
Jeongin chuckled once more, smiling brightly. "How about we be friends?"
"Sure," Y/N nodded slowly. "Uh, I'd better get back to the club room. I don't want to get in trouble for not getting my work done."
"Alright," Jeongin nodded in understanding, patting Y/N's shoulder. "See you around, Y/N!" The boy turned around, walking in the opposite direction from which Y/N stood.
Y/N walked back to the Filmography Club's classroom, explaining her unfortunate run-in with Jeongin and how she failed to complete her task. Though the president was disappointed, Y/N received little to no punishment and received a new camera to work with.
Y/N held the camcorder by its strap, continuing to find students to interview for the rest of the school day until it was time for her to return home.
After some time, Y/N walked down the street leading to her house, her camera in one hand, and an umbrella in the other. Y/N recorded her walk home as her Mary Jane shoes created ripples through the puddles that began to form on the cemented road.
Y/N created her commentary as she walked home. It was just her and her recording, her and her memories. The soft pounding of raindrops against her umbrella created an ambiance that made the walk home relaxing. She pointed her camera downwards towards the pavement to avoid damage to the camera, but occasionally recorded sights she thought to be beautiful. Y/N ended the recording as soon as she entered her house, satisfied that she recorded ample footage.
She closed her soaking umbrella and placed it on the coat hanger to dry. Y/N entered the kitchen to greet her mother with a bright smile, and cooed at her baby brother, recently born earlier in the year.
"Y/N, how was school?" Her mother asked, distractedly washing dishes while occasionally glancing at Y/N, then at her infant son.
"Good," Y/N replied without much thought.
"Could you look after your younger brother after you finish your homework, Y/N? I have a lot of chores to complete still," Y/N's mother sighed exhaustedly. It was hard to complete household chores when she had to balance taking care of a baby.
"Sure," Y/N smiled, her smile fading as she went into her room to complete her work for the day.
