The air was cold and the ground was icy. Many trees were left with little to no leaves and the flowers that decorated the nearby field had long since died.
Giyuu had changed his hiding spot to that of a small cave, he'd piled up some rocks near the entrance for additional protection from the sunlight and Sabito visited less frequently now. However, Giyuu was lucky to be faced with less sunlight, therefore less risk of burning up.
When he heard footsteps approaching he went to the entrance of the cave to greet Sabito, but quickly retreated back inside when he heard voices.
"Yeah, I heard there have been sightings of some demons around here, none any of the Moons though."
Demons? What are demons?
"I heard one of them has been eating people in the nearby village, one family every night."
Sabito did mention some of the families in his village disappearing…
"Mhm, apparently the cows in that village have been disappearing too, this demon must be some sort of greedy bastard."
The cows are disappearing? That's not good, Sabito really likes the cows.
"Well, we'll slay it no problem! It's not like it's some high ranking demon, it'll be easy!"
Giyuu peered out of his cave through a crack between some rocks, watching the two people walking by.
Both wore the same clothing, it seemed like some sort of black uniform perhaps. He noticed they also both had sheathed katanas at their hips.
Giyuu could remeber his sister's fiance had a katana. He wasn't really sure he knew how to use it though, the man did seem pretty clumsy and incompetent.
His sister…
It had been a year and a half since Tsutako was murdered and Giyuu was turned into a monster. A whole 18 months. He was nine years old now, almost ten.
He raised a hand to his unruly hair, fiddling with the ribbon he'd tied it up with. Tsutako's ribbon.
He looked down at the dirty, tattered sleeves of his red kimono. Tsutako's kimono.
He curled up, hot tears pricking his eyes. His knees agasint his chest, his back agasint the bitter cold wall of the cave. He just cried.
He cried and sobbed silently, in fear of the two katana wielding people, in fear of the "demon" in the village, in fear of the future. And over the death of his beloved older sister.
He sobbed until his eyes fluttered closed and he gave into exhaustion, falling into a deep, well needed sleep.

When Giyuu awoke, it wasn't peaceful, nor was it on his own terms.
His heart was racing, that shrill scream still echoing in his ears.
He recognised that voice, that scream.
It was Sabito.
Giyuu was sprinting, faster than he'd ever done before. His heavy breath turned to mist in the air before him and it ached in his chest, but he kept running.
He wasn't about to loose the only person he cared about.
Not again.
Sabito's village was quiet and the streets were empty. He glanced about, pausing for just a moment to catch his breath and take in his surroundings.
He listened, ears twitching. He took a deep breath, greeted the smells of sleeping villager and that horridly delicious smell.
Blood.
