Auden didn't go home that night.

But Cillian didn't mind at all. In fact, he had encouraged her to stay - his heart yearned for her to never leave his side again.

Before Auden had showed up that night, Cillian had been stewing in irritation that he wasn't at her gallery opening. He had known that she would arrive with Patrick, and the thought made him physically sick. However, he had planned on putting on a brave face and being the better man. Cillian knew he was on limited chances - he had fucked up so much with her already that he wouldn't dare make a scene at such a monumental event.

When Jenni called him, Cillian knew the possibility of him going was out the window before he even answered the phone. They argued, but Cillian reluctantly agreed to watch Charlie so she could ogle over Patrick. Apparently, Patrick had made it clear he wanted her there in support. Cillian made a point to warn his future ex-wife to behave herself knowing her and Patrick's history. But Cillian had a terrible feeling that she wouldn't, and he turned out to be right. He thought about warning Auden, but realized she actually had no idea of his wife's adultery and that to go down that road would be too much for one night.

He had been sitting on his couch, half awake, when Auden pounded on his front door. When he opened the door to Auden, he immediately knew why she was at his house. The way the rain had made her bright red dress hug the curves of her body nearly took Cillian's breath away. Her beautiful green eyes, rimmed with smeared makeup, were filled with pain and frustration. He fought the pull to reach out and embrace her, push the wet hair from her forehead and kiss the pain he had caused away.

Once Patrick had gotten involved with Auden, Cillian knew that by keeping Patrick's involvement in his failing marriage a secret, he would ultimately end up hurting her. But he couldn't bring himself to tell her. Cillian knew that unveiling it would bring up a million questions that he didn't know how to answer without revealing his true feelings for the young woman. So he kept his mouth shut, enduring Auden's relationship with a man who seemed to be making a habit of continuously ruining his life.

So when she showed up at his front door, he knew it was officially over. That his chances with Auden had been crushed by his stupidity and inability to be 100% honest with her. But he was wrong.
