Chapter 14

Persimmon couldn't win against Karlene and had to calm down. Now that no one was screaming things that could get us all executed, we could finally talk calmly. Persimmon hadn't calmed down but had to behave if he didn't want his mouth to be covered by Karlene's hand. Alaneo on the other hand was always calm and didn't say anything and I could see that he was ready to kill someone. I turned to Karlene:

"How is she?

-She woke up and was taken for her bath. We can talk to her after.

-We shouldn't go there at the same time so as not to scare her. I will take the boys with me and introduce them. After all, Lichen is Light's cousin."

I got up ready to look for the boys when Persimmon grabbed my sleeve:

"What are you planning?"

I frowned. Didn't I say it just now?

"I will introduce the children and have them spend time together to grow closer.

-I mean, what are you planning for the future? Are you going to punish Imeena?"

Karlene immediately straightened up and looked around making sure that no one was spying on us.

"Of course. Empress or not, she shouldn't hurt a child.

-Why is she Empress?"

Persimmon turned to Karlene with wide eyes. He was screamed at when he asked questions but Karlene said such things without batting an eye. Feeling Persimmon stare at her, Karlene frowned:

"Did it look like the Empresses loved each other? The sun of the Empire sent soldiers the second nebula arrived. Did she not know how her wife was treating their child?"

I shook my head:

"It seemed that she didn't.

-Was your sister a great actress or did they not tolerate each other to the point of not seeing each other ever?

-But then why would they stay married?"

Karlene rolled her eyes:

"Royals don't get married for love.

-I beg to differ. Satin and Imeena loved each other very much."

Karlene turned back to me with a frown:

"Did they? I saw the Sun of the Empire with you way more often than with your sister."

I shook my head:

"For having spent time with them, trust me. They were head over heels for each other. I have no idea what happened."

Karlene shrugged:

"There is only one step between love and hate. It seems having a child didn't work for them.

-Poor Lichen..."

Alaneo sighed and Persimmon jumped, having forgotten that he had been there.

"Anyhow, I don't care what happened between them. My only concern is for the child."

Everyone slowly nodded and now that we all agreed I left the room and went looking for the boys. Seeing how excited Light and Elm were, I smiled. At least there was someone who was enjoying this situation. As we were walking to Lichen's room, Light couldn't stop talking and Elm followed us listening intently to every word being said. Light started by telling us about how gorgeous this place was and he went on to trying to guess how long it must have taken to build such a place:

"Too bad that the paintings are of such bad taste."

I froze and looked behind us smiling at the maids innocently.

"I would have done way better than the painter."

I quickly bent down towards Light and smiled:

"Darling, it is not very nice to criticize someone's work.

-I am not criticizing. I am speaking my mind. You always said that we should argue our ideas.

-I know, darling and you are right but we are in the Palace and here even the walls have ears unfortunately. If you say something, the painter could hear about it too."

Light shrugged:

"I don't care."

I wanted to laugh really bad but had to hold back feeling the maid's glares.

"The people who live here like these paintings very much. We all have different tastes. Maybe we could learn to paint and this way you could show me what you like."

Elm seemed to really like the idea but Light shook his head:

"I don't have time for that. I prefer playing outside.

-Fair enough."

We finally reached Lichen's room and we got announced before entering. Lichen had been dressed in a cute yellow dress and she smiled seeing me but noticing that I wasn't alone, she quickly blushed and started staring at her feet. Elm did the same and I thought that I would have to say something to get them to talk but that was forgetting about Light's honesty:

"Who are you?"

Lichen jumped, hearing Light's question.

"I... I am Lichen."

Light looked her up and down before letting go of my hand and walking up to her. Lichen jumped and quickly looked up only to see Light extend her his hand:

"I am Light, like science that enlightens humanity. This is my brother, Elm and this is my mom. Nice to meet you."

Lichen stared at his hand for so long that Light put his hand down:

"You don't want to touch my hand? I washed it. I am not dirty."

Lichen quickly shook her head:

"It's not that. I don't mind."

Light extended his hand again and this time Lichen shook his hand with a smile.

"Nice to meet you."

Elm was still hiding behind me so I decided to say something:

"Lichen, these are your cousins."

Light and Elm really believed that they were brothers and I didn't want to treat them differently. Hearing me introduce them, Elm looked up at me with glowing eyes. Light on the other hand frowned:

"I have a cousin?

-Yes. She is adorable isn't she?"

Lichen went back to making herself small as Light turned back to her:

"She is. I hate yellow but I like it on you."

Lichen blushed:

"Thank you."

Lichen quickly opened up to the boys. Quicker than I would have thought. I thought that I would have to play the mediators between them for days but after an hour they were already acting as friends. Elm and Lichen were almost both as shy and they didn't dare look at eachother but followed Light with a smile and nodded quickly when he asked questions. They were adorable together and started calling each other brother and sister. Lichen seemed ecstatic at the idea of having a family and Light quickly became protective over her. It matched so well that I was relieved. I was scared that the boys would act jealous or reluctant but everything was going well. I still had to pay attention to treat the three of them equally but that wasn't a problem.
