Today was the day. I stood in front of the DWMA, a little hesitant to enter. This was it, my new life after my parents had sent me away, to 'give me a better life than they had' simply because I was a Demon Weapon. Nonsense, I was perfectly happy living with them. I felt like if I walked through those doors, it would be an official goodbye to the life I had lived for over fifteen years.
So instead of walking into the academy, which officially started its day in ten minutes, I stood in a paralysis outside. Other students walked past me, most of them ignoring me, a few giving mocking stares, and even fewer giving sympathetic glances. Even a handful of, what I assumed, teachers walked by without so much as checking on me. Not that it mattered, I wouldn't be able to answer them if they did say something.
By the time that most people had entered the building, I was still standing there. I felt an arm drape around my shoulder, and despite my gut telling me to pull away, I didn't. Instead, I looked to my right, where a tall, red-haired man in a black and green suit stood. His blue eyes drilled into my green ones as he gave me a wide smile. I returned a small one, and started to open my mouth to ask a question, before being abruptly cut off.
"Hey, what's a girl as pretty as you doing out here? Are you the new transfer Lord Death told me about?"
I tried to give a verbal answer, but my voice had gone, so I simply nodded.
His smile stayed on his face, and his arm over my shoulder, as he started to guide me to the academy entrance. A blush creeped onto my face as I noticed various students staring at us, despite how I tried to fight it.
The man kept his face up as he started to talk to me again. Now he took on a more professional tone, perhaps because of the other students around? I thought nothing of it. "I'm Lord Death's Death Scythe, most people just call me Death Scythe, but you can call me Spirit if you'd like." He gave me a smirk and a wink as he said that. My blush only grew.
I didn't know where we were going, and Spirit said nothing about our destination. Not that I minded, he was the first person to talk to me here, and I wasn't really sure I was prepared to start a 'normal' day here.
His grip instantly tightened, startling me, before he just as quickly let his arm fall. I was confused, and a little offended at the act, but I looked around to try and get a hint about what might have triggered it. I spotted a girl with blond hair and green eyes, who wore a long black cloak. She looked at Spirit with a disgusted look in her eyes, and he quickly ran over to her. I couldn't hear the full conversation between them, but I could make out a few pieces that would turn out to be very, very important.
"Maka, Maka please. Listen, please-"
"I'm not listening to anything you have to say! She is a new student, dad! How could you do this!" Spirit's daughter whispered to him, her face visibly heating up. Many other students were staring at the two of them, most people shooting disappointed looks in Spirit's direction.
The news that Spirit had a daughter wasn't what caught me off guard, but it was what she had said that stunned me. The stares that had been following us down the hall weren't for me.
They were for Spirit.
