"Well nothing is set in stone yet Patty..."

"Oh you didn't see them last night Tsubaki! They were all kiss-y faced! I think they're in love~"

It appeared that they didn't see us come in.

Kid let out an exaggerated 'ahem', and both Patty and Tsubaki shot up.

"Oh! Didn't see you there, glad you could join us," Tsubaki nervously mumbled, avoiding eye contact with both me and Kid.

I just smiled and nodded politely, a failed attempt at easing the tension.

Everyone fell silent as Kid sat down beside me.

We all sat in an awkward state until Maka eventually broke the silence.

"So! How's everyone doing?"

For a moment, no one answered her, and she shifted in her spot.

"Okay, then I'll start. My day was good, although Professor Stein's lecture today was so boring. I wanted to go fight!"

"I know!" Patty added in her usual way, ignorant of the thin veil of discomfort surrounding everyone else.

"Yeah but you think all of his lectures are boring," Liz responded.

After that everyone began to talk, the atmosphere dissipating away.

I relaxed and settled into the sofa where I sat between Kid and Tsubaki. Out of the corner of my eye I could see that Kid was focused on whatever conversation Black Star and Soul were having, so I turned my attention to Tsubaki, who was instead looking down into her teacup.

"Hi Tsubaki," I said, just loud enough for her to hear it.

"Hi Y/N," she replied in a calm and comforting voice, "how are you today?"

I thought for just a moment, wondering if I should tell the truth, but then decided not to burden her, "I'm fine."

"That's good Y/N, my day's been going well too."

It felt like the both of us were lying, but neither of us probed. Instead we just smiled at each other, and then looked away. I kept glancing back at her. She was the only other person not involved in a conversation, and I was hoping that we could start one together. That would be significantly easier if I had ever actually developed social skills and learnt how to start a conversation.

I felt a nudge from Kid, and looked over to his hand. He was holding it open, an invitation. I accepted and grabbed his hand, giving it a tight squeeze to ease my anxiety. He returned it, and started to rub his thumb back and forth. I relaxed even more, and leaned over towards him, and out of the corner of my eye I could see him relax too.

"Are you okay?"

I nodded.

"Are you sure? You've been quiet."

"Yeah, I'm fine, just don't feel like talking very much," I told him. It wasn't a lie, but I wasn't telling him the whole truth about it. He didn't really need to know.

The waitress came and took our order, all of us deciding to share a sandwich platter.

"So, Y/N," Soul started, his mouth half full, "do you plan on going to the anniversary party?"

"Oh, I actually didn't know there was one," I said.

"Did Kiddo not tell you? How rude!" Patty half laughed.

I shook my head, a smile on my face. I was a little offended Kid hadn't invited me yet, but it wasn't a big deal. He wasn't required to or anything. But still my thoughts tracked along to think maybe I had upset him.

"I guess I had forgotten, forgive me Y/N. There's an anniversary party we have every year to celebrate the founding of the DWMA, and it's coming up, all of the students are invited to come."

"I might go then. If I find something to wear," I replied, trying to appear that I didn't care.

Underneath the table, Maka kicked Kid.

"Ow! What was that for?"

Wow. Kid was so much more...oblivious than one would expect.

Maka gestured to me, and Kid just gave her a confused look.

"Ask her to be your date. She won't want to go if you don't invite her as your date!" Maka half whispered.

I couldn't argue with her. Dances were never any fun without a date. Even if this wasn't technically a dance, I still didn't want to go alone.

A look of realization flashed across Kid's face. Seems he finally understood what Maka meant, after she had flat out told him.

"Y/N, would you like to go as my date? Of course if you say no I would understand, and this doesn't have to be a date if you don't want it to be-"

"Kid," I had to stop him, if I didn't he would just keep on going, "I would be honored to go with you."

He instantly got much happier, "Oh, lovely. I can take you out to find something nice to wear if you'd like. It wouldn't be a bother."

"No, Kid! You can't know what she's going to wear, it has to be a surprise!" Patty interrupted.

"Oh...okay...well at least let me pay for it Y/N..." he seemed deflated from not being able to take me. It was kind of cute.

"Well if Kid can't take you I'd gladly take his place," Tsubaki giggled.

Out of the corner of my eye I could see Kid bristle, but I wasn't about to miss out on time with Tsubaki just to please him.

"That sounds nice Tsubaki, thank you."

I could feel Kid's anger radiate off of him, but he kept quiet. It was a little charming to have him be jealous of me.

"Well I'm still going to pay for it. How much should cover the dress, one hundred, two hundred dollars?"

I looked at him, shocked. Who just had that kind of money to spend on a dress?

"Kid, that's...that's way too much. Fifty would more than cover the price," I told him.

"No, no. You're going to have something nice. Tsubaki, make sure she gets something nice. Y/N deserves it."

"Aye aye Kid."
