We walked in silence for a while. Every so often me and Kid would look at each other, lock eyes for just a moment, and then look forward again. Kid and I stood behind Spirit as he led us towards DWMA, though I'm certain that we would have been fine on our own.

Spirit went around a turn, and Kid got a confused look on his face.

Kid walked up beside Spirit, and tapped his shoulder. "Death Scythe, why are we going this way?" he inquired.

"I just like to go this way," Spirit retorted.

"But it would have been quicker to just go straight."

"Well, I just like the view this way."

"Buildings block everything."

Spirit was stumped, unable to retort. Kid got a smug look on his face, knowing that he had won this round.

"Well, seeing as there's no reason to take the long route, we can turn around now. Let's go Y/N."

Behind us I could hear Spirit sigh. I expected him to make one last effort to have us go his way, but instead he followed behind.

We turned the corner and I saw ChupaCabras off a little ways. It looked like a 'gentlemen's club', but it was different from the ones at home. More...sophisticated. Of course, that didn't excuse the men who attended such places.

Spirit picked up speed as we got nearer. Perhaps the building made him as uncomfortable as it did me.

Just as we passed by ChupaCabras, I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. Looking over I noticed that it was two women who had caught my attention.

"Oh Scythe-y! Did you come to see us? And you brought some friends, how lovely!"

Spirit winced. Scythe-y? What was that about? Did he know these women?

"Hey girls...heh."

"Why haven't you come and seen us?" One of the girls whined.

"I've been...busy."

"Did you find something more important than us? Is Maka's mom in town?"

Suddenly, everything fell into place. Why everyone wanted him to stay away from me, why he acted the way he did towards me.

I moved behind Kid.

"I think I understand now," I whispered into his ear.

"Go on Spirit, tell them why you haven't been going to see them. Tell them you found someone new to put your attention towards. Tell them who it is."

Spirit didn't say anything. He just stood there.

Kid led me away from them all, "Come on Y/N, we don't want to be late to school."

Behind us I could hear the women interrogating Spirit about me and what was going on.

I felt so foolish. Why didn't I pick up on what was happening?

"It's okay Y/N, no one told you. I probably should have said something. I don't know why I didn't," Kid reassured me.

I didn't know how to reply, so instead I just grabbed his arm and pulled myself closer to him. Kid pulled his arm away from me, and made me face him.

"Listen to me, look me in the eyes."

I obeyed his instructions.

"It's not your fault."

I knew that, but it didn't make me feel any better.

"Nod, let me know that you understand."

I nodded.

Kid put his arm around my shoulder, and we walked to school in silence.
