“SHE COULD HEAR WILL OVER THE PHONE?” Charlie said in a hushed voice, hearing Joyce still rummaging around in her room. She had been called that morning from Jonathan, the boy had explained what had happened after she had left and she told him she was coming round to check on them and pick him up for school. They seemed to have gotten over the slight disagreement they had had last night, but that’s what happened most of the time when the two of them had a fight. “Like, she heard his voice?”
“His breathing,” Jonathan clarified, serving up some breakfast, his hands shaking slightly. “I don’t know what to do… I mean, I’ve made the posters. I don’t know, Charlie. I-I-I don’t know.”
“It’s gonna be fine,” she reassured him, taking some toast out from the toaster and placing it on the plates next to the eggs. “I’m sure it was just some sort of prank call… It’ll be fine.”
“Yeah, yeah. I know, I know,” the boy nodded, sending her a small, thankful smile.
Joyce walked out from her bedroom and the two kids went silent as they carried on getting breakfast ready. The woman sat down at the table, but was fidgeting as she lit her cigarette, eyes flitting over to the seat Will normally occupied.
