I. the beginning

neveah didn't hate the sun but god did 87 degree weather get to her and her emotions. the one thing about being a lifeguard is you never want someone to drown or get hurt but there are times when its so hot you almost can't help but pray that someone will just slip into the water and get pulled into the tidal wave. neveah sat on her chair as she watched all the people below her.

where she was she could see everything and everyone, the chair was so high up but likely she had loyal knees and her body weight wouldn't kill her. she saw caden near the front who looked like he was about to fall asleep and she couldn't help but laugh at the boy, she knew that he was always tired and she didn't blame him. security would suck.

then she saw juna leaning out of the window of the shop she was working in to hand someone their ice cream and thats when she saw katya staring at her and she smiled again. she knew about the girls crush on her and it made her smile deeply. she wasn't a match maker but she knew that the two acted like they hated each other for funsies.

"ya know you're staring at alot of people" she heard and she looked down to see alexander and pandora staring up at her. she smiled as she removed her glasses from her eyes and shrugged.

"people watching is like apart of my job ya know" she told pandora flirtatiously and alexander laughed with a sigh. he was tired of the girls not admitting their feelings for each other and he might punch them if they don't say anything soon.

"oh i know" pandora replied

"you guys on your break?" veah asked and they both nodded.

"we have to go get something but we'll be back" alex told her and she nodded in understanding.

"hey if you see ronan or kay, tell them i said hi" she told them. ronan worked with them at the ice cream stand but kaylin was someone who didn't work with them, she worked locally and was in the same friend group. the group of them were odd but they made it work.

"god sometimes i hate working here" alexander stated and veah couldn't help but question it. she made eye contact with pandora and they both shrugged it off. they probably shouldn't have but it wouldn't matter.

"so i'll see you guys later" veah said and they walked off. then she heard someone call out and she jumped down as she ran and helped. caden and the others watched the torrez girl work fastly and smoothly like she had done this a million times and i can tell you that she has. caden stared at her for a little too long and then he shook his head. he knew that he shouldn't feel like this, neveah would never feel the same and he saw the way she looked at pandora but veah was just someone who everyone loved but she hated people. it was who she was.

"who is she?" someone asked and katya sighed with a smile.

"thats veah, shes our resident lifeguard and she's really good at what she does" she told them and the person nodded in agreement. juna couldn't help but agree, neveah torrez was just someone who knew what she was doing and knew how to look good doing it.

"are you alright?" she asked the 10 year old boy after she had given him mouth to mouth and forced the water out of his lungs.

"i will be, thank you" he exclaimed and she smiled at him and nodded. she helped him up and watched his family walk over to him making her climb back up onto the chair and watch again. at this point, it was rounding the time of 5:30, the park closed at 8:00 and she had about two and a half hours until close. she could only hope that no one would walk in and drown again. it was her job but sometimes it was tiring.

then she watched as kaylin walked in. their places of work had just closed and they couldn't help but come visit their friends. she saw caden turn his head to them and she notice him look kaylin up and down.  she also saw molly and ronan standing close together and she couldn't help but smile 

"v!" she heard and she looked down to see katya standing there looking up at her with a smile on her face and she couldn't help but smile back. veah and katya were friends and they were there for each other no matter what.

"hi kat" she called and she jumped down as she smiled at the girl. they smiled at each other as they began to walk around the park together. they could see everyone and it was like they were all ready for the closing of the night. veah had to get home to her cats and her parents. they knew that she enjoyed being here and if their daughter had friends here, they would let her be there.

"so how was today?" katya asked the girl and veah shrugged

"not too bad, saved about 4 people, had to clean up some blood from a kid falling on his knee after running. the basic shit" she told them and katya nodded. even after a while of working there she got used to the sight of that sort of thing and she would always be used to it. it was nothing to her.

"how much longer do we have?" kat asked as veah looked at her watch and saw that it had been 20 minutes.

"2 hours" she told her and kat groaned making her laugh. they smiled as they seperated; kat went to caden and kaylin as veah found alex and dora again.

"there you guys are" she called and they turned to her. after that, they stuck with each other until close. it was 8:30 when they locked up and cleaned everything. sometimes working in an amusement could be tiring. they all walked to the front together and there they saw it.

the ten year old boy veah saved, he was pierced through on the fence.

"WHAT THE FUCK?" caden said and he turned to veah

"im high but we're all seeing this right?"

"yeah, this isn't a mistake, someones trying to kill us" veah said and then they heard the sound of a gun but they didn't say anything as they all scattered.
