The next morning i rushed to the flower shop, filled with excitement for what i was gonna tell Karl.

I put my hand in a loose fist and hesitated a moment before knocking on the dark wooden entrance.
"Sapnap darling is it you? You know there's no need to knock" a voice from inside said.
"Goodmorning Mrs Jacobs" I said as I opened the door with a smile.

I looked at the lady in front of me,
her baby blue dress with yellow flowers fit her perfectly, while beautiful pearl earrings enhanced her elegance.
She kept her light brown and gray hair tidied in a bun decorated by a few daisies, as white baby hair framed her face consumed by age but nonetheless beautiful and elegant:
Her green eyes shone protected by her long lashes, her cheeks were slightly rosy, and a warm, welcoming smile always stayed plastered on her.

She was sitting on a chair behind a large oak desk that had papers and pens scattered on it and a lamp that formed a flower in the corner.
The store had products for all kinds of plants, garden hoses and watering cans.

"Karl is in the back planting some bulbs if you were wondering, feel free to reach him if you'd like." She sweetly smiled.
"Thank you" I said returning the gesture as i made my way towards the back of the structure, leaving the door closed behind me.

Mrs Jacobs was Karl's paternal grandmother, and she had been raising him since his parents passed away in a tragic car accident when Karl was still a toddler.

I opened the rear door, facing a greenhouse filled with flowers and other plants. I scanned the area admiring every detail, from the orchids and tulips on the left to gladiolus and dahlias on the right.
I walked across the structure letting myself drown in different perfumes and colors until i reached another exit that led me to a small fenced area full of bulbs and blossoming flowers.

It didnt take me long to find a boy digging a small hole in the dirt near a few others, his hands gloved, one holding a tiny shovel and the other some bulbs.
He quickly looked in my direction, eyes squinted to see through the beating sun.
He wore straw hat to protect from the heat, dungarees, a green and brown striped shirt and some gardening boots, stained in dirt and soil from the consistent work.

He quickly got up and tilted his head to the side, smiling
"Hey Sap! Good morning"
"Hi Karl!" I said walking towards him with open arms as an invite to an embrace.
"I can't, I have dirt all over me" he said giggling.
"Do you think I care?" I hugged him, leaving kind of a surprised karl.
He returned the hug, then distanced himself and booped my nose, covering it in soil. We both burst in a fit of giggles, a warm feeling storming all over my chest.

--

After planting the last bulbs and watering them, i helped him put all the tools away and waited for him to wash his face and hands.

I watched him put what looked like a letter in his pocket and grab his guitar to then direction himself towards the door.
He looked back at his grandma that was stapling some sheets of paper together and waved at her.

"Bye gran, I'll see you by sundown!"
"Bye Mrs Jacobs!"
"Have fun kids!" She responded smiling.
We walked our way to our spot on the hill as laughter and conversations took place with the same nonchalance as breathing would require. It always felt natural to be around him.

--

I sat on the grass and patted next to me, waiting for him to join me.
He did, then took out the guitar from its cover and looked at me.

"Hey" he said smiling.
"Hey" I echoed, returning the gesture.
"I finished it."
A puzzled look appeared on my face.
"The song" he quickly explained himelf.
"No way, can i hear it?"
"Okay, but you might have to pay me afterwards."
"Shut up."

He took a breath, then looked at me briefly and started singing.

So My Darling-Aucustic by Rachel Chinouriri

"You are my best friend, you are my best friend... Remember i'll always love you"

"So my darling, so my darling so my darling, when our hairs are turning grey, won't even remember our youngest days"

"Remember i'll always love you"

"Who W-W-What" My eyes stayed wide and my jaw open, unable to properly formulate a sentence.

He put the guitar away and got closer, his cheeks more and more red.
I composed myself and cleared my throat, focused on how close our faces were.

He finally spoke: "That was about you."
I stayed silent and watched him as his mouth inched to my ear.
"It's about confessing your love to someone before it's too late" He said in a whisper, as if it was a secret.

My whole face flushed pink and my mind exploded with a million thoughts. A warm and fuzzy feeling explored my whole body.
He distanced himself and looked at me, in search of a reaction, clearly nervous and flustered.

That was it. I had my confirmation.
I cupped his cheek with my hand and crashed my lips on his.

He hesitated a moment and then kissed back.

i brought my hands to his waist to get him as close as i could, butterflies filling my whole body.

I broke the kiss just to give him quick pecks on his lips as i was forming a phrase.
"I- wanted- to- tell- you- some-thing- too-"
I gave him one final peck and distanced myself to look at him better.
I'd never seen him so red.
I got close, our lips barely touching.
"I like you too" i said, my voice low.

I looked at his eyes, then his lips, then his eyes again.

He kissed me again, then hugged me tight.
"I'm sorry"
I furrowed my eyebrows, confused.

"We can't do this"

...

"What?"
