The house was big. Made of wood and stone. Every light in the house was on. There was hardly a sign of living in the house. I stared at the large house in awe for minutes straight. "Fancy. Come on. Stay close" rip whispers as he guided me along. The property was huge. Multiple barns lining the entire ranch. Rip and I followed behind the man named John. He was a taller man, balding slightly with a dark brown mustache. He was in his late 40s. He was sweet and calm to me but when it came to rip he was harsher. I watched as John opened the large barn doors. We were greeted with the sounds of dozens of horses. I watched the horses heads look down the isles of the barn. I stared in slight fear. I had never seen a horse before. "Im assuming this is my patient" a lady spoke as she exited the horse pen. John nodded. "Fancy, this is doctor sam. She'll be taking a look at your eye" I stepped back out of fear. I hid behind rips leg as I was terrified by the thought of someo touching my eye. I was sensitive about my eye. Any slight touch causes so much pain and discomfort. "It's alright fancy. I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm gonna help heal up that boo boo of yours" the woman with the warm smile held out her hand. I looked up at rip with fear in my eye. "Im right here fancy" rip whispered. He pulled his jacket off then draped it over my shoulders for comfort. I stepped over to the woman. "Have a seat right here honey" she pointed to an old beat up chair. I looked up at her as I sat down. Her fingers gently pulled my crusted shut eyelid apart. Her gloved finger tips hitting my wound caused me to squeal in pain. I began to cry. "No! No! It hurts! No! Please! Just leave it alone!" I sobbed. I pulled away from her quickly. "Fancy it's infected. Let me clean it. I'll be quick"

"No!!" I yelled. I was about to run but I was quickly caught by John's large hands. His hands slammed me back down into the old beaten up chair. "Fancy...what did I tell you.." rip growled in a low voice. I gulped down my pride. My hands gripped the sides of the seat I was in. As she split my eye open again I dug my fingers into the dirty dusty fabric of the chair. The doc began washing out my eye. The solution used in my wound felt soothing to the heat of the infection. "Isn't isn't good Mr Dutton ...looking at this injury, it looks to me that fancy will never be able to use this eye again. Whatever dug into the eyeball broke the retina. The infection ate away at the ball" her words spooked me as the small child I was. "She'll be blind? Forever?" The ignorant boy questioned. The doctor nodded. "Sorry fancy."
"What does blind mean" I spoke softly as I picked the mud off of my polkadot pants. Rip kneeled beside me "it's means...you won't be able to see from that eye ever again" he explained softly. My small mind was boggled. Quite honestly, my eye didn't bother me until I was around 12, that is when it became an insecurity. As I grew my eye healed oddly. My eye was left looking white and milky. Almost like a cataract. You could see the scar in the eye tissue where my father's nails gouged it out. I would never reveal to anyone why my eye looked the way it does.

....

I stood by rip as he cleaned out the horses stalls. Rip was given the duty at the time. John said as long as rip and I worked we could stay here forever. We had been there for two days. It was 4:30am and the cowboys began to walk. I stood in the barn doorway watching them from behind the door. A tall lanky man approached the barn. His hair was grey and brown same with his mustache. He smiled down at my small self. "Well ain't you the purttiest girl in the world" he spoke. I stepped back shyly as he spoke. "What's your name?" His smile was warm. Warm and sweet. "...fancy" I whispered. "Fanny?" He questioned. I let out a very small giggle "fanCY!" I said louder. He grinned. "Well it's very nice meeting you fanny! I'm Lloyd!" He held out his massive hand. My teeny hand gripped his "nice to meet you Lord" I snorted a giggle. "LloYD!" He said louder. His hand rubbed my hair as he walked towards rip. "Did you saddle up them horses son?". "I..I would sir but im not really sure how to" rip said slightly embarrassed. "Watch and learn" Lloyd showed him how the saddle works, explained Every little step. Rip followed every step learning very quick, making sure to never mess up, not even once. After some time the men began to work, they spent the day what seemed like wrangling. To me it just looked like they loved to scream at cattle. I was young and dumb. I watched the best I could from a distance with only one eye. It took me months to adapt to my life with one useful ball. What my eye didn't fail to see was a young blonde girl around the same age as rip. She confronted the small girl whom was watching her father work. "What are you?" She spoke. My small hands gripped onto the cold steal bars of the cattle pens. I looked up at her "and what's wrong with your face" I stayed quiet as my mother taught me to never speak to strangers. "Are you fucking deaf?" She growled. "That's a bad word" I spoke up. "Ah look. It does speak" she rolled her eyes. "Fancy!" Rip whispered loudly at me. I looked over at him. His hand waved me over like a dog. I followed his motion. The girl followed behind me. "What are you here for?" She asked. Rip was puzzled at her words. No hi. No hello. Just a weird introduction. "I killed my dad" he spoke. She huffed a laugh then sighed. "Cool. I killed my mom" oddly enough they had something weird in common. "I'm beth" she spoke. Rip nodded. "I'm...I'm rip" he said nervously. "You sleep in there?" She pointed to the small barn closet. "Yeah?"
Beth pulled her sweater off her shoulders revealing her bra strap under her dress strap. "Want to have sex?" She asked. Rip was puzzled once again. "Well. Uh..sure I guess" without any hesitation beth dragged him into the closet and shut the door. Once again I was young and had no idea what was going on. I held my face to the door. "Hi! I'm fancy!" I introduced loudly through the door. "Go away fanny!!" Beth shouted. I frowned. "FanCY!" I corrected. They didn't respond. I hung my head. I stood lost for a long moment. Not sure what to do without rip. I suddenly heard a loud bell ring from outside. My curiosity got the best of me. I went to investigate. My small feet squished through the cold mud to get the the sound. I noticed the cowboys rushing into a building that looked identical to the barn I just left. I followed them in. The cowboys gathered around the table shoving their faces with food. Oh. A dinner bell, I thought. They laughed and teased as they choked on their food. Gross. I walked to the end of the table. I reached up my hand to take a peice of bread. Suddenly the room went quiet. I didn't care. Less slurping and munching I had to hear. I carried on eating my bread. I walked around as I enjoyed the food that didn't belong to me. I noticed their TV, their couch, their stereo and even their bunk beds. The TV captivated me. In my house we were much too broke for a television. I stared up at it. "Fancy!" A voice smiled. I looked towards the back of the room. Loyd greeted me as he exited the bathroom. The room was still quiet. One of the men cleared their throat. "who did you knock up for this one?" One man cackled as the rest of the voices followed in laughter. Lloyds brows furrowed. "Shut it!" He grumbled at them before kneeling down to me. "What are ya doin in here half pint?" He pushed the filthy hair out of my face. "Well rip was playing with some girl. So I got bored" I said with a mouthful of bread. He smirked. "So you come in here and steal my bread?" I nodded on response. "Alright" he grunted as he stood up. "Boys, meet fancy. Our cowgirl in the making" he held my hand leading me to the table. They all watched a bit confused. As I sat down they shrugged off the confusion then cheered me on. "Hi! Hey! Fancy!" They greeted. I sat beside Lloyd watching the Mountains of food fill the table. My eyes glazed over. "Where did you come from fancy?" A man asked. I shrugged my shoulders. "I don't know. Mama and Jeffery are gone. Daddy hurt them. So rip hurt daddy. I came here. I'm hungry. Rip couldn't find food. I have no eaten! Can I eat!?" The men stared once again with sad frowns. I didn't understand why at the time. "Of course baby. Eat all you want" another cowboy said. I reached out gripping a very large turkey leg. I chowed down like no tomorrow. Lloyd watched me with sympathy in his eyes. The looks he gave the other men broke their hearts for me. "Where is your mama now kiddo?" Lloyd asked. I pointed to the ceiling. "Rip says heaven" I said with another mouthful. Lloyd cleaned his throat. "Well honeysuckle, you finish eating and I'll show you the bath"

"I hate the bath!" I yelled. Lloyd laughed aloud "me too half pint!"

....

"She's right here boy. Sound asleep" Lloyd whispered. I was passed out on his bunk wearing someone's old band Tshirt that fit me like a dress, along with rips torn up Carhartt jacket over me like a blanket. Rip sighed a long sigh of relief. "You're her brother right?" Lloyd asked. Rip nodded. "She's something special you know that?"

"That girl is my whole word. The only thing I'm living for"

"That's good son. You keep her safe. I'll keep her fed warm and happy." Lloyd patted his back. "She'll be alright here. Don't you worry about her safety here. This is the best place for her" rip watched me as I slept. He pushed my wet clean hair out of my face. "Is that a turkey leg?" Rip questioned. Lloyd laughed loudly "she wouldn't give it up. Passed out eating it. That's her second one. She can sure eat like a damn horse!"
