CHAPTER 7 - INFAMOUS DETECTIVE

"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

- Arthur Conan Doyle

RECAP:

Karna, after making a close observation, noticed that the girl at the park was the same one he saw at the police station. How fortunate he was that she showed up while he was thinking about her, he thought to himself. He just stood there, catching sight of her graceful presence near the tranquil lake. She was working out like she was preparing herself ready for a fight. He felt that she would be the one for him. Karna moves up the slope and reaches the top. The breeze felt good, and there was a really nice bench beneath a large tree. He then dialled Vrindha's phone. Then he waited for her, taking in the view of the city from the top of the hill and the refreshing breeze. Not soon enough, Vrindha showed up. She walked gracefully over to sit with him on the bench. Their talk went on far into the night. At that moment, they enjoyed each other's company, admiring the blossoming connection between them. Following a full day of conversation, they had dinner, and then Karna walked Vrindha home.

STORY CONTINUES:

The following day, Karna unexpectedly encounters the girl he met at the police station, and they embark on their quest to uncover evidence and solve the case. At last, Karna asks her name after realising he had forgotten to do so. With a soft smile, she replies, "Dharani." Engaging in light conversation, they delve into the DNA results obtained from the previous forest murder. Two distinct blood test reports emerge—one belonging to the victim and the other to the killer. Surprisingly, Dharani presents Karna with a chess coin, "BISHOP," which she claims to have discovered at the crime scene. Karna accepts the chess coin, sensing that it holds a crucial clue. As they examine the DNA, it matches a past case filed years before. That was the case, that Karna was determined to solve it until his dying breath. He is filled with elation, realizing that he can able to find the pattern of these murders based on this earlier-filed case. A thought sparks in his mind—perhaps one of his former police colleagues can assist him in accessing the file archives at the police station.

Karna asks one of his close colleagues for help. With the help of that colleague, Dharani and Karna make their way to the file library within the police station, eager to find the case file that might help them to solve this mystery. They spent about four hours looking. His colleague advised them to wrap up their search as quickly as possible because it would be extremely problematic if another police officer happened to see them. Unfortunately, to their dismay, the file is nowhere to be discovered even after a long search. Frustration wells up inside him, and the haunting illusions start to resurface. Overwhelmed, he hurled the files in a fit of rage, and his hands started punching the shelves. Dharani tries to intervene, but the situation spirals out of control. The shelves bear the brunt of his punches, his knuckles bleeding from the impact. Karna falls to his knees, disappointed and exhausted. Amidst the chaos, his eyes are drawn to a file that lies next to him. The contents of the file reveal information on a retired detective, labelled as the "INFAMOUS DETECTIVE." Despite the disappointment, curiosity wells up in Karna's heart.

After a lengthy discussion between Dharani and Karna, they finally came up with the idea of meeting him. With the help of the file's contents, they were able to get to the detective's house. They rang the doorbell with a mixture of expectation and uncertainty. A middle-aged man, approximately 40 years old, having only one hand, opened the door and welcomed them inside. Before welcoming them, the man looked at Dharani and asked, "You are...?" After Dharani introduces herself, the man turns to face Karna and queries, "And he...?" Karna informs him that he is a suspended police officer.

They settled down for a cup of tea, preparing themselves to seek guidance from the detective. Karna initiated the conversation with the detective by saying, "I need help... The day before, I looked over your file. And I know you haven't solved any single case, but you are involved in every single one of them. Perhaps we can receive a tip of a hint on the ongoing murders. Simply state what you know." With hesitation, the detective answers, "I am a failure... You can understand through my labelled name, though, and... You can't get any information from me. Why would I want to be involved in these murder cases instead of chilling...? My existence as an detective has ended in the past , right now I am just a common, jobless, useless man sitting in my dorm. So, just leave me alone." With a heavy heart, he requested to be left alone. Dharani, realising that the detective might be their last hope, pleaded with him to lend a hand. She emphasised the escalating number of killings and the urgency of putting an end to the violence. Nevertheless, their plea was ignored, and the detective stuck to his denial. Feeling discouraged, they thanked him for his time and left his house. Karna feels a strange kind of rage towards the detective for turning down their offer.

Karna was left with no choice but to work his own way. Karna ignored his own health by starving himself of food and sleep in an effort to solve the case, working tirelessly day and night. Dharani supported him during those challenges and helping him in putting out his tension. Acknowledging the toll the case was having on Karna's mental and emotional health, Dharani suggested an idea to get him out of town to give him a much-needed break from the never-ending hunt for the truth.

Hoping to distract him from the case and provide a little respite, she surprises him with a visit to a mall. They set off to explore the entire mall area. After a while, they enjoyed a quick entertainment fix by watching a movie together in the mall. Following the film, Dharani gets hooked with the excitement and begins perusing the stores, trying on various outfits. However, their leisurely stroll takes an unexpected turn when the mall suddenly falls into chaos. All of a sudden, the mall sirens begin to sound. Terrified yells and people were racing along the corridors. Karna grabs Dharani's hand and pulls her away from the crowd in the middle of the chaos. They see people scattered everywhere, running for their lives to stay safe. Confused and terrified, the crowd rushes onto an open space in the mall and notices a stage in the middle. It is decorated with flashing lights and a big screen.

A man steps forward on the stage, his voice echoing through the chaos as he addresses the terrified crowd. His tone is chillingly calm, and his words are calculated, betraying a twisted intelligence. The man on stage announces, "Welcome to the greatest reality game show ever. So, the game is DONGA-POLICE. Don't worry, I'll explain the game and its rules. It's simple: I let loose 10 armed thieves inside this mall two minutes ago. Simultaneously, the police officers already stationed here will engage in a battle to capture or eliminate the thieves. You have to capture and kill each other. The stakes are high, dear participants. So, who will survive? Police or thief? The winner will be the one who survives and receives a prize. And the crowd is playing as my audience. My dear audience, settle in, have fun, and enjoy the show. I believe all of the rules are clear, and the game begins now..."
