Chapter Ten

Tangled Truths

The room was silent, everyone watching the two people in front debate with bated breath. No one knew who would win. Gil was smart, and so was Catherine. There was no certainty that one would win and that the other would lose.

“Lies are important in our daily lives. The people with no other method of defending themselves resort to this and it will be their only protection from those who intend to harm.”

Gil shook his head. “Lies are harmful. It is the very epitome of the word itself. You cannot defend yourself from harm by using harm.”

“Oh, but you can fight fire with fire? How is it possible that anger can be fought with anger, but not harm with harm?”

Puerto Galera, Philippines

Eena opened her eyes, looking at the tiles below her. Her body moved gracefully, water accompanying her. She closed her eyes and stopped, standing up and walking towards the edge of the pool.

Water trickled down her body as she climbed up a steel ladder and exited the pool, her hourglass figure clad in a light green two-piece bikini and her straight black hair wet and sticking to her milky white shoulders.

Standing near the pool, she reached for her hair and wrung out water, drops spilling onto her milky white skin and trickling down her hips, her waist, her chest. Eena put on her yellow flip-flops, walked to a wooden beach chair, and took her towel and black sunglasses. She unfolded the towel and laid it on the chair. Smiling to herself, she laid down, put on her black sunglasses, and just relaxed, closing her eyes.

She spent a few seconds in relative silence until she heard light footsteps coming in her direction. She opened her eyes and removed her sunglasses and perched them atop her head, sitting upright.

“He was checking you out, you know,” said Reini, handing Eena a tall glass of banana shake, a little red umbrella on top of it, just across the white curly straw.

Reini was wearing a black bikini, the top and bottom of which met right on her flat abdomen where a medium-sized stainless steel ring was. A pair of black sunglasses was perched atop her head and a pair of white Havaianas, the straps of which were decorated with pearls.

Eena laughed and took the drink, grinning. “Of course he was. We want to get his attention, remember?”

Reini laughed, putting her melon shake on the small foldable wooden table between Eena’s seat and hers, and lied down. “Not too much attention, I hope,” said Reini, taking the sunglasses perched on her head and lowering them.

The Sandcastles Beach and Resort was beautiful. Coconut trees were everywhere, and Reini loved the place, knowing it was a place she would love to go to again to relax. As it was, she actually felt relaxed but she restrained herself from relaxing too much. After all, they were on a mission.

The sun felt warm on her skin and the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore was a lullaby to her ears. She smiled, feeling content.

“How long do we have here?” asked Eena, sipping her drink.

Reini sat up and removed her sunglasses, perching them again on her head. “Two days and then we’re back to Los Angeles.”

Eena groaned. “Is it bad that I don’t want to go back?”

Reini grinned and took her drink. “I’m not someone who can judge you. This place is beautiful.”

Eena sighed. “When all of this is over, I will definitely get myself some time alone and I will come back here to just let go of everything and just relax.”
