Chapter Seventeen

In Memoriam

“And then he told me that our meeting had been a coincidence.”

Eena was seated on her desk, enrapt. Greg was sitting on his swivel chair, attentive.

And Reini was seated at her desk, her head buried in her hands, completely confused.

Eena cleared her throat. “I don’t think that had been a coincidence,” she said, shrugging. “I believe everything happens for a reason. It’s God’s will.”

Greg rolled his eyes. Reini knew he would disagree. He was an atheist, after all, not believing that there was a god. “I don’t think so.”

Eena sighed. She had had so many debates with Greg about that certain topic. “Yes it is. I believe that we have destinies and God’s paved a way for us, a certain road we have to follow to fulfill our destinies. I believe that our every action, word, or thought are there for a reason and they’re all part of God’s plan for us.”

Greg scoffed. “Really?”

“Yes, really,” said Eena adamantly. “Everything we do is part of God’s plan for us.”

Greg chuckled. “If I suddenly decide to fuck someone on this table, I doubt God would do anything about it.”

Reini laughed, straightening in her seat. “God might not, but I’m certain Amrie would do something about it.”

Eena blushed, glaring at Greg. “You know what I mean. I meant that some events have to happen and some people were meant for us to meet.”

At that moment, Samuel and Joshua appeared, walking towards their direction. Reini sighed and hung her head, not wanting to see Samuel. Apparently, it wasn’t something she could avoid because after a few seconds, Samuel and Joshua were right in the middle of the small aisle separating the desks from the other desks.

Samuel cleared his throat awkwardly, shifting from one foot to the other. “Miss Amrie wants to see you.”

Reini stood up, looking everywhere but Samuel. “What is it? Did I do something wrong?”

Samuel shook his head. “No. You have a mission.”

Reini nodded, walking away with Joshua by her side. She didn’t want to be near Samuel any longer, didn’t want to be forced to stay there as they both tried to forget what had happened.

The thing was that the events kept replaying themselves in her head. She could never forget.

Samuel glared at Greg. Greg looked at Samuel and rolled his eyes, sighing. “Oh come on,” he whined, incredulous.

“Stop glaring at him, Sam,” said Eena, standing up. “It doesn’t suit you.”

“For the love of all that is holy, please,” pleaded Greg, his voice fraught with frustration, “stop being jealous! I am not checking Reini’s ass, Sam! I am gay! Gay! I’m as gay as a fucking unicorn dancing on a fucking sparkling rainbow!”

Samuel turned red as a tomato.

Greg rolled his eyes once again and stood up, sighing. “It’s Joshua’s ass I’m checking out. Happy?”

Eena stifled a laugh before patting Samuel on the back and walking away with Greg.

Samuel just stood there with his jaw on the floor, mouth wide open.

Their acceptance letters to Harvard had been a surprise.

Catherine was shocked, her mouth wide open at the sight of the crisp white envelope that was about to determine her future. Her mom was seated at their small rickety dining table for two, and the white envelope was there on the table, the Harvard coat of arms on the upper right side of said envelope.
