Seconds after the accident...
"Chi? Chimwemwe!" Hasani was screaming my name from somewhere close by, his voice sounding weak and strained. "Chi, man! I need... you... to... say something."
"I'm here." I affirmed, my breathing laboured as my chest tightened heavily with each word.
"I can't... see you, man. There's... all these car parts in... in the way." Hasani said, his voice trembling with obvious fear.
I didn't respond as I tried futilely to lift myself up, or move to a less painful position than I was in, but I was sandwiched between car parts and the wet, cold tar road beneath me.
"Chi!" Hasani cried as it grew harder and harder for me to breathe.
"I'm here, man. I'm here." I said, reassuring him.
"You can't... ssstop talking, Chi. Do you... do you hear me?" his voice was growing weaker with each passing second and tears fell from my eyes.
"Sani. I can't feel my legs. I can't feel my legs, man. Without my legs I'm as good as dead."
"Stop, Chi. Make sure... you don't try to move... okay? Don't... move. Let's pray." Hasani took a shaky breath and it was nothing I'd ever heard before, his chest rattled and he moaned in pain.
"Okay. Okay. Lord, heal Hasani! Heal his chest. Heal his body. Get him back to his wife safely. " Hasani was mumbling his own prayer as I prayed. He stopped abruptly and said my name with strength that wasn't audible in his voice a few seconds ago.
"What about you, man? Don't tell me you're giving up. We're praying for you too."
"Okay." I said as I felt my body go numb. "Lord, if I'll never be able to use my legs again, take me. Take me now."
"Dude!" Hasani strained, his voice thick with emotion. "Don't say that, Chi."
More tears ran down my face as my eyes became too heavy for me to keep them open.
"Sani..." I mumbled as I felt myself slip into heavy sleep.
"What, Chi?" Hasani said, almost sounding like he was begging me for something.
"Aisha..." I strained, fighting the urge to go to sleep.
"What about her, man? You're fighting for your life but you're still thinki-"
"H." I said, interrupting him. "Tell her... Tell her that..."
