"En garde, Uncle Alan," Meg told her uncle near the end of her fencing lesson in the backyard of her mother's home, her sword in hand.

"So you think you are ready to take on your mentor in a possession like that?" Alan questioned.

"I sure am," Meg replied with confidence and enthusiasm.

"Well, if you are going to duel someone, you better make sure that your knees are slightly bent so you can stay more balanced."

Meg immediately took this advice and bent her knees.

"Now may we start the duel?" Meg asked excitedly.

"Yes, Meg."

The two then fought, with Meg keeping all of the tips her uncle gave her in mind.

At the end of the duel, which Alan allowed his young niece to win, Meg's mother, Rosella Catalani, came outside.

"How is the lesson going?" Rosella asked, hoping that both her daughter and brother were not hurt.

"It was wonderful, Mother; I won my first duel!" Meg told her mother joyously before tightly embracing her.

"Oh, that is wonderful! Your father would be so proud. Now come in, both of you; it is time for tea."
