In the hushed night, Monaco cradled its tranquil secrets under a sky adorned with a million stars. Where the principality whispered tales of both serenity and glamour, this city acted as a temporary sanctuary, or perhaps an escape, for Marie-Elise. Monaco wasn't too far from home, but it was enough to offer her some space from the whirlwind of emotions that had defined her life back home, a respite she desperately craved after her recent life events. But despite packing her bags and leaving it all behind, there were still reminders dotted around her little apartment. As she leaned on the kitchen island waiting for her tea to brew, her eyes scanned the living room— from the piano that hadn't felt her touch in weeks now with a thin layer of dust lining it, to the pages of music scattered around. She wrapped her hands around the warm mug, breathing in the scent of chamomile and honey, and walked towards her balcony. Taking a deep breath in as she stepped into the embrace of the night air, she took in the view in front of her. As she gazed out at the distant sea, mesmerised by the moon's dance upon the waters, she couldn't help but think if she would find her rhythm again and rekindle the melodies her soul craved.

She retreated from the balcony, drawn by an unspoken yearning to explore the streets on this quiet night. The soft patter of the rain didn't stop her as she opened her umbrella and stepped out into the streets of Monaco. The moon, like a silent guardian in the sky, cast its shimmering glow upon the cobbled streets. She found herself wandering along, with no particular destination in mind, but her feet naturally led her to Port Hercule. Beneath the star-studded sky, her footsteps echoed along the harborside. As the moon cast shimmering reflections upon the water, she took her phone out of her pocket in attempt to try and capture the beauty of the moonlit harbour before her. That's when she noticed a lone figure on a bench just a few steps from her. With only a hoodie over their head, the lone figure was slumped, almost like they were wrapped in contemplation, silently absorbing the surroundings, seemingly lost in their thoughts. She would normally continue on her way, but her feet were rooted to the ground. Something tugs at her, urging her to approach.

With her umbrella in hand, she hesitates but eventually steps forward, extending the shelter over the figure. They notice the shadow looming over and look up, momentarily puzzled by her unexpected presence. His eyes reflected the sea, a captivating blend— like a stormy sea, where tones of greens melted seamlessly into blues with fleeting wisps of grey. A faint smile softens the confusion in his eyes and he diverted his gaze back to the sea. She took his silence as an invitation and sits down beside him. The air between them carried a quiet understanding, and maybe even an unspoken connection between two people who were seeking some calm from sounds of crashing waves. Eventually, the quietude gives way to a hesitant yet genuine conversation, their voices weaving through the night, guided by a shared moment sparked beneath the shelter of her umbrella.

"So, what brings you here?" he asks, his eyes still focused ahead. With a bit of contemplation, she hinted at seeking solace or a respite, her words infused with the desire for a peaceful escape. His reaction, a momentary look of surprise, suggesting a different interpretation— a question that had been meant for her presence in Monaco rather than the nuances of her emotional journey. She chuckled softly, realising the misunderstanding, "Oh, just a little getaway." She turned her head to look at him and returned the inquiry with a gentle smile, "And you?". It was the first time she could actually have a look at who this person was. The moonlight reflected on his skin, his eyes sparkled like the glistening waves in front of them, she found herself drawn to him and it was quite hard to look away, but his reply snapped her out of her train of thought. His response was a simple "same," leaving her wondering about the enigmatic layers beneath his words. Same as in he was here on holiday or same as he too was trying to find some sort of escape? She just nodded, not sure what to say.

"You ever had that feeling, like you've been reaching for something, eyes set on a dream for the longest time? And then, by some stroke of luck or destiny, it's finally within grasp. It's this incredible rush, this sense of fulfilment that washes over you, and you're there, right in the middle of it all. But then, something shifts. Suddenly, the weight of it all hits you... expectations, the demands, the looming uncertainty of what comes next. And then you start asking yourself if you're ready, if you've got what it takes to carry that weight?"

He catches his breath and his words hung in the air. He looks to her for a response— it was a subtle yet unmistakable flicker of surprise, a moment where she was caught off guard by his sudden display of vulnerability. Sensing her reaction, he quickly amended, "Sorry, I've probably been babbling on way too much." Yet, before he could retreat into an apologetic silence, she interjected softly, her voice carrying a touch of understanding, "No... I get it." There was a shared resonance in her words, an unspoken acknowledgment. Her response drew a subtle shift in his expression, a hint of surprise mingled with a tinge of relief, as if he had momentarily glimpsed a familiar understanding in a sea of uncertainty. It was a fleeting moment of connection, a silent bond forged in the recognition of shared emotions, before the conversation gently pivoted to lighter topics, both steering away from the depth of their earlier exchange. Their conversations meandered through light-hearted exchanges, shared anecdotes and tales spun from the fabric of their experiences. Laughter danced in the air, momentarily drowning the weight of their thoughts.

As the night's veil began to fade, giving way to the burgeoning dawn, the sky painted itself in hues of warmth, a silent witness to the passing hours. They marvelled at the passage of time, scarcely noticing how minutes had transformed into stolen moments. "Think it's time to head off?" he brought up, and although she nodded her head in agreement, there was this small hope in the both of them that the sun would stop rising and they could continue on this night.

He extended a gesture of goodwill, offering to accompany her on her walk home. Amidst the emerging daylight, the city began to stir awake— the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the symphony of soft chatter from nearby cafes mingled in the fresh morning air— a comforting backdrop for their stroll. Nestled amidst a quaint neighbourhood, the charming shop house she called home, came into view. The smell of freshly baked pastries from the bakery just below her apartment wafted through the air and led them to her doorstep. "This is me," she gestured towards her front door. "Thank you..." he began, a note of gratitude lacing his words, "but I've realised I don't even know your name."

"Marie-Elise, but Eli works" she replied warmly. His lips curved into a gentle smile, "Well, thank you, Eli."

Her eyes held a twinkle of gratitude as she mirrored his sentiment, "I wanted to thank you too, but..." The pause hung in the air for a moment, as she thought carefully about what she wanted to say. "Pressure can be scary, but it can also be a catalyst for greatness, it's how you harness it that matters. Don't let it overshadow your capability... Trust yourself." Her voice carried a sense reassurance, a calm sincerity underlying her words.

There was a glint of surprise in his eyes, she remembered what he had rambled one about, but the genuine appreciation for the unexpected solace her words had offered was reflected on a soft smile gracing his features as he slowly nodded his head, taking in her word of comfort. "It's Lando, by the way," he offered, his tone light yet earnest, breaking the silence. There was a hint of vulnerability in his confession, a willingness to bridge the gap between their chance encounter and the unveiling of their identities. They exchange fleeting glances and parted ways. A chance encounter between two lost souls on paths unknown, different in their own right, but with shared unspoken understandings. As they both continued on their own paths and lives, Marie-Elise and Lando were unaware that they have forged a bond beyond comprehension. Little did they know, their destinies were now intertwined in ways they couldn't fathom.
