Impossible to Get

"I don't understand." Michael sighed. "Am I doing something wrong?"

Yes, the answer is yes. Michael is doing something wrong.

His friends were all gathered around and comforting him.

"No, she's just playing hard to get."

She is, in fact, not playing hard to get.

In total, they're a group of six. Lisa and Brody got together about a year and a half ago. Katie and Phil started dating almost eight months back. Michael has been trying to make his feelings for Claire clear for a couple of weeks now. But she hasn't responded to his advances. The rest of the group is convinced she's just making Mike work for it.

She's not making Mike work for it. Claire just isn't interested.

"You think?"

No.

"Totally," Katie chipped in. "I mean, it's practically inevitable."

It is not inevitable.

"Yeah, I'm sure she'll agree to a date soon," Brody encouraged Michael.

She will not be agreeing to a date soon.

Michael sighed. "I hope so."

"What are you hoping for?" Claire entered the room and joined the rest of the group.

Oh, what perfect timing, Claire.

"That it won't rain tomorrow," Phil lied easily. He nudged Michael. "Mikey here wants to go out."

Real subtle, Phil.

"Oh," Claire said hesitantly. She wasn't sure if she believed him but decided to let them off the hook this time. "Go out where?"

"Uh, I actually haven't gotten that far yet. But would you want to come with?"

Claire shrugged. "Depends on what you're looking to do."

Claire, no, that sounded way more flirty than you would think.

The reply raised some eyebrows. Their friends obviously thought she was suggesting something. In reality, she just didn't want to get stuck going somewhere she didn't feel like going. Claire loves her friends, but she isn't going to sacrifice all her time for them if they want to do something she doesn't care for.

"O-oh," Michael stuttered and blushed lightly. "What do you want to do?"

"I don't know. I'm not the one to make plans. You know that."

"Yeah. We could go see a movie."

"Sure," she agreed nonchalantly. "There is one I've been wanting to watch if that's okay."

"Sounds great." Michael smiled.

"Cool."

Claire didn't really notice that the other hadn't chimed in on the plans.

She should've paid attention to the fact that no one else talked about the plans.

The rest of the day went by. The six of them continued hanging out at Brody's house. They made conversation, played some games, and ate lunch and dinner.

Claire went home that night, looking forward to going to the movies tomorrow. She was excited to watch it, and she always had fun watching movies with friends.

She really should have wondered why no one else spoke up during the planning.

The next day came, and Michael picked Claire up at her house. This was fairly normal. They lived near each other and often carpooled when the friend group hung out.
