It had been a couple of weeks since Selene's death and Tyler was slowly coming to terms with it. Things were still difficult and his mental health was still horrible. He and Josh spent a lot more time writing and producing which helped ease his thoughts.
Tyler tucked his hands further into his coat pockets as he trudged down a sidewalk within downtown Columbus. It was mid-November now and the autumn air was becoming chillier by each passing day. He needed something to warm him up before he headed to his parents' house to pick Adelaide up. They had offered to take her for the night to give him a break. He appreciated it of course, however, his little girl was always on his mind.
He paused at the door to a small diner he had been going to frequently now. There were two reasons he went so often. One reason was that the elderly woman whom he had met back in early October, Frannie, was a waitress at the diner. She was always checking up on him and he enjoyed her company. They often sat at a table near the entrance and drank coffee while they chatted.
He stepped inside and relished in the warm air inside the diner. A grin crossed his lips upon seeing Frannie behind the service counter, talking to a young woman. Once the woman received her order and left, Frannie noticed him there. "Tyler, honey, it's lovely to see you!" Her tone was cheerful as always and that's why he took a liking to her.
"Hi Frannie, how are you doing?" He asked as he stepped up to the counter. Frannie greeted him with a grin.
"I'm lovely, thank you. What can I get for ya?" Her question made Tyler glance up at the menu board above his head. There were many choices but he didn't even have to look at the board anymore, it had just become habit.
"I'll have a coffee and a ham and cheese omelet please." He replied, fishing his wallet from his pocket and handed over the money. "I'll have it out in a few." Frannie said as she graciously accepted his money. He nodded politely at her and turned to snag his usual hang out spot, otherwise known as, a booth table nestled in the furthest corner of the diner.
The first place where he had met Selene for the first time.
She had been working as a waitress probably up until she had to take maternity leave. She absolutely loved the place and the people who came in. Tyler smiled fondly at the memory of when he had finally gotten up the courage to ask her out, with prodding from Josh of course.
His best friend had been teasing him for months about his ever growing crush for the brunette. His insecurities got the best of him however. They always appeared at the worst times. The voice in his head had made him believe lies for years. But maybe things could be different.
Tyler snapped out of his thoughts when the clank of his mug and plate meeting the tabletop made him blink a few times. He tilted his head up and met pale blue eyes. Blonde hair strands framing her angelic face. He smiled softly at the woman. "Thank you." He uttered quietly. The woman smiled politely in return. "You're welcome. May I get you anything else?" She asked sweetly.
Tyler shook his head, his attention averted to her name tag pinned to her shirt. Jenna.
When the waitress left, he looked at Frannie, who was waving him down. Suddenly, she gave him a wink and a large grin. 'My granddaughter.' She mouthed the words to him before turning away.
Tyler focused back on his meal, the tiniest of smiles creeping up one corner of his lips. Maybe this could be his answer. His second saving grace.
