Regulus has always wanted to have a cat. Specifically a black cat. To try to persuade his parents he did everything they asked and always tried to be the perfect son they wanted in the first place. When Regulus was seven, he heard his mother talking to her friend of how she only had Regulus because she saw Sirius, his older brother, as a problem not worthy of the Black family name. This crushed Regulus and he felt he more responsibility forced onto him than he should ever feel.
