Spoilers for Les Misérables
Okay, obviously there have been a lot of Enjolrases (Enjolrai?) over the years, and they're all incredible - special shout-out to Aaron Tveit who is absolutely amazing and I wish he'd got to play that role on Broadway instead of the movie. This aside, I believe that Ramin Karimloo's performance as Enjolras is perfect. He is literally so amazing in this role.
First off, he has the most absolutely beautiful voice. It's so rich and smooth and perfect. I feel really bad for Nick Jonas in the 25th anniversary concert having to sing next to him constantly and have that contrast.
Then there's just the determination that he shows. Ramin really plays Enjolras as a hopeful and determined revolutionary, and I think he kind of changed the way people thought of this role. All the older footage of Enjolras, he's often portrayed as constantly angry, done with life and so ready to throw his all at an unlikely victory. But Ramin's Enjolras can see a bright future beyond the barricades and fighting and he wants to take everyone there. He knows that fighting lies ahead but he constantly sings with a smile on his face, looking up, ready for that bright future. I think that his performance has really changed the character of Enjolras for the better (and to be more book-accurate, honestly), and now his character is played with some degree of the traits I described.
Finally, Ramin REALLY knew how to play up his relationship with Grantaire, which I am ALWAYS here for. I mean, it helped that he's often opposite Hadley Fraser and the two of them have some of the best on-stage chemistry to-date, but no matter what, he always shows the deep connection they have. Really, ALL his background acting is SUPERB.
Final note, I just love the way he brushes off Marius's talk of Cossette in every single recording. It makes me smile so much.
So there you have it, and thank you so much for reading!!! Comment something you love about Les Mis, and I'd love requests if you have any!
