My Gaelic isn't too good since I haven't had to use it for years. hearing her voice for the first time in a long time oddly calmed me.
"[my baby,]" her voice cracks through the phone, knowing she's coming to tears at this moment.
my hand grows tighter around the tag around my neck as I wait for her response.
"[how are you? what are you doing right now?]"  I let out a deep breath, relaxing my body as I walk back to the window.
"[I've been alright, just,]" I hesitate for a second before just talking.
"[something just happened, and I've been released from duty for now. so, I thought it would be nice to give you guys a call.]" I stay straight and honest with her.
"[where are you right now?]"
"[I can't say. its confidential.]" I answer honestly.
"[so, your still at work.]"
"[yes.]" I take in a deep breath before continuing.
"[enough about me, how is everyone?]" I ask, taking in the view of the darkened beach once again.
"[your brother is graduating high school soon. I'm sure he would want your back.]" that's right. Jamie was in grade seven before I left.
"[your baby sisters seventh birthday just past too.]" I never understood why she would have another child.
"[Katheen just got married and had her first baby, a healthy baby girl named jasmine.]"
"[that's nice.]" I answer as I grab a drink from the fridge. I don't know how else to react. the thought of no on informing me about her wedding kind of hurts. I could have gotten some leave for them.

"[and Dougal. I haven't heard much from him since he moved.]"
"[he moved out?]" I ask surprisingly. he seemed so happy in that house. I wonder what happened.
"[I don't know why. I hope he's alright.]" she answers.
"[what about Aunt Tiffany? how is she?]" I ask, knowing she's going to get annoyed. I don't know what their feud is, but aunt tiffany is almost the only person I like in the family. hearing a sigh through the phone backs up my statement.
"[she's been herself. nothing more to it.]" I don't know if there's some type of history or if it's just a middle child thing. guess that's what makes me and Tiffany bond so well. were both middle children.
"[how about dad?]"
"[we don't talk anymore. if you want to talk to him your more than welcomed to.]" her bitterness starts to show. I forget Johanna isn't my father's child. don't know why I do since there's a large age gap between her and Jamie.
"[Laoghaire just broke up with john.]"
"[I don't know who he is, and doesn't she go through four men a day?]"
"[that's not nice, love.]" I sometimes forget that Laoghaire is her sister, considering the fact that she's just a year older than me yet she's still my aunt. even grandma didn't know when to stop having kids too.

"[have you found a man yourself?]" with her words, my mind traces back to Simon, trying to hold back some tears, yet failing to hold a few.
"[I work with men,]" I start as I wipe the tears forming on the edges of my eyes.
"[but I don't have the time to fall in love.]" I lie.
"[you don't have the time? or no one likes you.]" her narcissism strikes.
"[that's not nice.]" I mock, repeating what she said. I also forget that she has somewhat of a close relationship with her sister. Katheen and Laoghaire are the two my mum would hide a murder for, I wouldn't doubt that she hid their side men for them too.
"[I just want you to settle down and marry a-]"
"[I'm not getting married.]" I cut her off, making it clear that this is my life.
"[love, the things you are doing shouldn't be done by a woman,]"
"[I've seen plenty of women in my field, mum.]"
"[because they obviously weren't raised right.]" funny coming from you. I'm tempted to say that. but I don't want the conflict.
"[where is everyone.]" I manage to change the subject.
"[asleep. I've been up for a while for some reason.]" I don't know what else to talk about until a random thought came to my head.

"[do you remember every Friday after school, you would take us to get ice cream.]" I start, slightly remembering something.
"[yes, I do. Mr. MacTavish. you guys loved the buttercream.]" I let out a curious huff, thinking i now know the answer I'm thinking about.
"[didn't he have a son?]"
"[he has two. Dan and John. poor man stopped business when John was deployed.]" the pieces were put together. I've always had a weird connection to soap the second we first met. I knew there was something behind it.
"[why? been thinking about Dan? I'm sure I could conjure something for you two.]"
"[no, it's not that.]" why the hell does she always go straight to marriage.
"[I think I'm working with John.]" I inform her.
"[Oh. Are there any feelings?]" Again. My goodness I think I'm just going to have a moment on my own now.
"[No ma. Look I need to leave again. I'll try and find another time to call.]" I tell her, feeding her one more lie before hanging up the phone. A breath leaves my mouth as I pinch my nose in between my thumb and index. Why on earth dose she always goes straight to a marriage. I throw the phone gently on the table before flopping myself on the sofa, kicking my legs up at the end and laying my head at the top. I know it's only been a few hours, but I wonder what the task force is doing already. I wonder if soap is already getting on Simons nerves or if Gaz is once again trying to explain some nonsense to Price and Simon.

Whatever it is, I already miss it. It's as if there my second family. Another home to relax with.
