Katya's POV:

I'm running down hallways that I have never been down before. I can hear him behind me. I swear I can. There doesn't seem to be anyone else in this whole building. WCKD has been evacuated. An alarm started blaring shortly after the gunshot rang out, but it only lasted a couple of minutes.

I didn't stop moving when I heard the shot, even though I wanted to. I wanted to go back and save Ava, but I knew that would be wasting my own life. She would have been disappointed in me if I went back and brought the serum right to Janson.

I'm flying around a corner when I run face-first into a wall. No, not a wall. A person. Their hands reach up and grip onto my shoulders. I slowly tilt my head up and breathe a sigh of relief. "What the hell are you doing here? You guys should be half a mile away," I say and force a laugh.

"We came back to get you," Minho states matter-of-factly and moves to the side to show Teresa behind him. She smiles and gives a small wave.

I hug Minho quickly and then pull away, my brow furrowing. "Where are Thomas and Newt? Are they alright?"

"They're fine," Teresa says, stepping forward. "We left them in the East courtyard to wait for us. We should head back now. Do you know where your dad is?"

"I'm right here," a voice speaks behind me. My body stiffens, and Minho quickly lets go of me. He grips the launcher strapped across his chest and points it at Janson. I whirl around to see him stumble along the hallway, blood spattered all over his clothes. The gun hangs from the tips of his fingers, ready to drop at any moment. "What are you all doing together? Trying to go with those idiot kids? Honestly, I expected more from you, Teresa. But, you two are just as disappointing as I always believed you to be," he growls, pointing the gun at us with shaky hands.

Janson starts coughing, black blood flying out of his mouth and down his chin. He doesn't bother to wipe it away. It leaves me sick to my stomach.

Teresa moves next to us and puts her hands up in a show of peace. "I can't speak for Katya or Minho, but I'm not going with anyone, Janson." She nudges Minho's arm lightly with her elbow.

Minho takes that as his queue. He aims the launcher as Janson rambles about no one offering to take him with us. Minho doesn't let him finish before he aims the launcher and fires. He misses.

Janson stops talking, and a grin spreads slowly across his face, all teeth and menacing. I hear Minho gulp beside me. "Ah, shit." He quickly aims the launcher again, but his hands are shaking now.

"You were trying to shoot me? Unfortunately for you, a launcher is only temporary. A burst of electricity that will last about five minutes, resulting in excruciating, blinding pain for the unlucky sod who gets-" Janson falls to the floor, streaks of electricity like lightning covering his skin. He twitches uncontrollably, and a patch of wetness spreads on the fabric of his pants.

Minho lowers the launcher and sighs. "He was talking too much," he says, chuckling.

"Good job, Minho," I say, nudging him lightly. He smiles and gives me a wink in response. He steps a few metres over to Janson, reaching down to take the gun out of the convulsing man's grasp.

"Don't do that!" Teresa yells. "You'll just get that electricity coursing through you, as well. We'll have to leave it. Tell Thomas that Janson's still around, and he'll surely finish him off. He's made it very clear that he wants to be the one to end Janson."

"I didn't know you were so close to Thomas," I reply, a smirk playing on my lips. I try with all of my heart to ignore the worry growing in me at the thought of potentially losing my dad.

Teresa rolls her eyes and flicks her hair behind her shoulder. "As if. But he wouldn't shut up about it when we were in the Scorch. I'm assuming his feelings about Janson haven't changed much over six months."

The three of us start heading away from my dad towards the courtyard, where Teresa said Newt and Thomas would meet us. As we walk down the hallways, Minho sidles up to me and wraps his arm around my shoulders. "So, why did Ava take you?"

My heart aches at the mention of her name. She may have been cruel in how she wanted to achieve certain things, but she was still my friend. Ava was like a mother to me. "She found something in my blood and wanted me to help her."

"What was it?" Teresa asks, turning her head over her shoulder to look at me.

I draw my attention to my shoes as I walk. "Ava found that my blood doesn't react to the Flare like other Immunes. Instead of just fighting the virus, it kills it altogether. She told me that all of WCKD's research found only one other person who did this. But she didn't tell me who it was," I say and bring my gaze up to Teresa in front of me.

"It's Thomas. It has to be. When we were in the Scorch, Brenda was attacked by cranks and got a pretty bad bite on her leg. But a woman at the Right Arm harvested some of Thomas' immunity and injected it into Brenda. Just once. It was the woman that your father shot."

My eyebrows rise, realising what she's saying. "But all the research you have been doing here showed that they needed regular injections. Their bodies couldn't even fight the virus off with the immunity weakening it."

"That's why I found it so hard to believe. When Thomas found me the other day, I saw Brenda. She's completely fine. The bite has healed, and she looks better than I have ever seen her." Teresa pauses in the middle of the hall and turns to me. "It would have been amazing to get serum out of him or you," she states and flicks me a small smile.

I don't respond but pull one of the vials out of my pocket and pass it to her. "Is this...yours?" she asks, and I nod. "How many do you have?"

"A dozen. Ava made me take them to keep them away from Janson," I respond, and I watch Teresa's smile grow.

"This is incredible! We have to get one of these to Newt. He's sick." Sadness flickers across Teresa's face.

I can't help but frown, worry eating at my insides. I need to get back to him as soon as possible. "I know. He doesn't look good," I mutter, looking back down at the floor.

Teresa nods and continues down the hall. Minho and I share a look before he drops his arm from my shoulders, and we follow after her. We go down five different hallways until we make it to the door that opens to the courtyard.

We walk through the door, and Teresa stops moving. Something is wrong. I look past her, and my heart leaps into my throat. I can see Thomas slumped against the garden, his head in his hands. But he isn't what I'm focusing on. In the middle of the courtyard, collapsed in a heap with a knife sticking out of his chest, is Newt.

"NO!!" A scream forces itself out of me. I run to Newt's still form. My knees give out, and I fall to the ground beside him. I pull his head into my lap, rocking back and forth. I've lost him again. But not just again, for good this time.
