Newt's POV:

Minho wasn't in the carriage. We had a whole plan organised, but he wasn't even there. We arranged a stolen Berg, a bunch of cars, and heaps of tools to cut the carriage from the rest of the train. We even got two new guys to help us. Everybody had a job. But we failed. I told Thomas to think about the big picture of this mission, that this is about more than just saving Minho. We have to think about the other kids. I am a hypocrite. Jorge has been trying to assure me in his own abrupt way that it's understandable to be disappointed that we couldn't save Minho, but I just feel like a fraud.

In my head, I was so certain that we were going to get him out of there. That he was going to be safe from all those monsters at WCKD...

No, that's not right. They aren't all monsters. She isn't. She would never hurt him. What makes it so much worse is deep down, I was hoping that for some reason Katya would be in that carriage, and we could have saved her. I should have known that would be too good to be true.

But trying to look at the bright side, we rescued heaps of kids. And Aris and a girl we met at The Right Arm, Sonya, were among them. We've spoken to them about Minho, and they said that he was in their carriage. When we entered it, I noticed an empty chair but didn't think anything of it. How could he just disappear?

Vince believes it was the other two guys who helped us disconnect the carriage from the train. They were new to The Right Arm and eager to join this mission. The most damning piece of evidence of all is we haven't seen them since. They went missing immediately after we finished getting the carriage undone. They must have been spies for WCKD and somehow gotten Minho out to take back to them. That's the only explanation I can come up with. Otherwise, it doesn't make any sense to me.

"Newt?" I'm in the building that houses all the bunks, sitting on my bed, trying to wrap my head around everything, when Sonya walks over to me. I look up at her and smile, confused why she would be talking to me.

"Hey. Is everything alright?" She looks at me shyly and seems a bit uncomfortable. "Did you want to sit down?" I gesture to the bunk opposite mine. She sits down quickly and looks at her hands in her lap.

"I don't really know how to start this..." She takes a deep breath and looks up at me. "But I'll try my best. When I was stuck at WCKD, I got quite close to Katya. She told me all about the two of you. And...during my time there, she told me that she had gotten curious about something and looked through my subject file." I furrow my brow at her, not sure where this conversation is going. But the mention of Katya has put me a bit more at ease. As long as she's alright, that's all I care about.

"Okay. I'm guessing Katya found something interesting...?" I look at her, prompting her to continue her story.

Sonya averts her eyes and clears her throat. "Yes, she did. She learnt I have a brother who is also a subject of WCKD. She told me this for a sense of connection to my past before the Maze. But also in hopes that if I found him, I could tell him, and we could be a family again. If he wanted that. Because I know I do." Sonya keeps her head tilted down slightly but looks up at me through her eyelashes.

"Wow, that's amazing! And is your brother here, with The Right Arm? Did you want me to help you find him? Come on, let's go out and start looking." I stand up quickly and make my way to the door. I'm only a couple of metres away from my bunk when I hear Sonya giggling. I stop and turn around, planting my hands on my hips. "What's so funny? This brother of yours will not be waiting. We have to find him. Let's go!" I open my arm in a big swooping gesture towards the door.

Sonya stands up from the bunk and walks over to me, still laughing. "Katya told me you could be a bit clueless sometimes, but I still didn't quite expect it. Newt, YOU are my brother!"

"...What?" I look at her, lowering my arms down to my side. I have no idea what I'm supposed to say. Sonya has the biggest grin on her face, and she looks like a weight has been lifted from her shoulders. I take a tentative step towards her, not sure what to do. "Are you sure?"

"Yes! Katya double-checked with your file, too. They said the same thing. We are siblings!" Sonya jumps up and down. I can't help but smile. I have a sister. I didn't think I'd ever know anything about my family or past, but Katya has changed that. I close the remainder of the gap between us and wrap Sonya in a tight hug.

She returns the embrace, and we stay like that for a few minutes in complete silence. I can feel Sonya start to cry, and I realise I'm doing the same thing. My tears run down my face into her hair. I hold her tighter, not wanting to let her go. I'm scared she might disappear. "I'd love to be a family again, Sonya," I whisper, and she cries more. I continue to cry, but I'm over the moon. Even if Katya isn't here, she still has a way of making everything better.
