It has been, so far, close to an hour since I texted Zayn, so I wonder what's keeping him held up. Perfect! I'll text him- wait, my phone's almost dead! Nice, like I need this right now! Exactly, whenever I need it, my phone's about to die. Just my horrible luck! Suddenly, here he comes, straight through the door, smoothies in hand, at a full sprint.
"Sorry, babe. Long line." Zayn said, trying to catch his breath. He handed me a smoothie, and it was exactly what I wanted- strawberry banana with extra whipped topping.
"It's cool. I understand. Long lines suck, don't they?" I said, as I sat on the couch. Zayn plopped carefully down next to me. I stared pointlessly into his eyes, and it seemed as if he was hurt about something. I decided to ask him about it, but I would have to be very careful what I said to him.
"Hey, Zayn. Is there something wrong? You don't seem as chipper as usual." I asked, being very careful of my word choice.
"No....why?" Zayn asked back.
"Well, you don't seem as happy now as you usually do. Is it me? Did I do something wrong?"
"No....." He seemed to trail off of the subject, so I had to be even more cautious of the words that I would use to address this problem. "It's just that I never feel like I can impress you."
"Why do you think that? I've never been disappointed with anything that you have done. What's really going on, Zaynie?"
"Nothing. Janel, really? Why are you asking me this?"
"Because.....there's something going on with you. You're about to start crying. I can see it, Zayn. What happened?"
"I'm just tired, Janel, lovely. After we finish these, we are going to bed."
"At 3:00pm?? Yea, ok......." Traces of tears were starting to come to my eyes, so I had to watch what was said from here on out, or else one of us, or both of us, would start crying.
"Janel, what's been going on lately? You're about to start crying. Is everything alright?"
"Yea, everything's fine. I'm just enjoying this smoothie."
"You're thinking about something else; I know it."
"What? No..I'm just fine, Zayn."
"You're scared about this sponsor, aren't you?"
"How'd you know?"
"Janel, I can see it in your eyes."
"Oh.....well, I don't want to go to Regionals. There's no way! I haven't near the experience needed to do well." There was a very long pause, dead silence, before I ran to my room, crying. Zayn came chasing after me, but he had no chance to catch me before I locked myself in there. He tried to come in, but I had the door locked, so he couldn't come in. Exactly what I want!
"Janel, come out. I want to talk to you. Or at least, unlock the door." Wings by Little Mix was playing in the background, and I still wanted nothing to do with Zayn, so I ignored him. "Janel, please, don't be like this! I just want to talk."
"Noo!"
"Why not? Janel, I want to make sure that you're alright." He heard a gasp come from the other side of the door, making him even more worried. "Janel, what is going on in there?" He doesn't have to know.....right?? Well, he won't. I'll tell him that I stubbed my toe on my bed or something like that. Yea, that will cover it up perfectly. Until he finds out for himself, that will work.
"Why do you want to talk to me, anyway? The only thing that I do is bad for you."
"Not true! Janel, please. Can we talk."
"Maybe after I self-harm."
"What??? What did you just say?"
Sorry for leaving you in a cliffhanger. Find out what happens after this in chapters 25-27!
