The following day, Jolie and her friends left their History of Magic lesson together.

She and Madeline waved to Daphne as the three girls split up, heading to their separate lessons—the last one of the day.

Jolie walked alongside her roommate all the way down to the dungeons, making their way towards the Slytherin common room to collect their supplies for Potions.

Slipping into the dorm, Madeline shoved her textbook into her bag, sighing as she angled her neck from side to side, stretching. Jolie grabbed her Potions text, pushing it into her own tote alongside her History of Magic book. Then, she grabbed her Ancient Runes text, shoving it in with the others, making her bag strain with the weight.

Behind her, Madeline groaned.

Jolie grinned. "What's all that about?"

Her roommate huffed, "Just... thinking about talking to my father about this sodding trip."

"I'm sure he'll be elated for you," Jolie jested, smiling to herself as she stuffed her Herbology book into her bag and tested the weight again.

She did not have to turn to know Madeline was rolling her eyes.

"He's never going to let me go, you realise."

Jolie sighed, setting her bag aside and plopping down into a seat on her bed for a brief moment. "He will—eventually. You'll just have to be convincing enough."

Madeline followed suit, sitting down on her own bed. "And if I'm unsuccessful? If he says no anyway?"

"I could always meet him during his office hours," Jolie offered innocently. "Let it slip that I might know your true surname... Perhaps allude to informing the rest of the school should he refuse to let you come—"

Madeline gasped in amusement, stopping her. "Oh, yes, blackmail! I'm sure he would love that."

Jolie laughed as she shrugged. "Hey, I'm willing to shoulder the burden if it comes to that. I can even show him the Map—make sure he thinks I figured it out all on my own."

Her roommate sighed, then laughed again.

"Besides," Jolie went on, "surely he could sympathise with me. I've been through a terrible breakup! I need my friends with me—"

"I highly doubt he'd sympathise to that extent," Madeline choked. "But... he might respect you a bit for it—the blackmailing. Might even be impressed."

"That settles it, then," Jolie said primly. "I shall meet with him tomorrow—"

"You'll do no such thing," Madi sighed, shaking her head. "If anything, that is an absolute last resort. Like, last, last, last, la-a-ast resort."

"Fine. I suppose that's fair. Though, tell me, does he know about me and George breaking up?"

Madeline arched an eyebrow at her. "Yes, actually... Why do you ask?"

"Does he sympathise at all?"

"Of course he does—"

"Good—"

"Why?" Madeline asked again.

Jolie smiled at her roommate, standing and shouldering her substantially heavy bag.
