Prologue

      A smoky black tabby tom walked into a haze of light. No sound was audible around him, only eerie silence. He dreaded something. Something that was about to happen: only he didn't know what. The world around him began to shine. Dark and foreboding trees loomed over him hauntingly. He felt his spine shudder. He walked forward A crunch of snow sounded under his paws. It was cold and made his paw jerk away, only to feel the pain in all the others. He bit his lip and walked on cautiously. Then, a flash shot around one of the trees. The black shadow had gone so fast he couldn't have made out who- or what- it was.

"Hello?" he squeaked. His body was frozen in terror and his legs and mind screamed for him to run, but his heart pleaded for him to stay. He didn't know why, but it made his paws stay put. His breathing quickened as he saw the shadow again. He unsheathed his claws, just in case.

"Who are you?" he managed, holding back a cry. He began to build up confidence when nothing had happened. "What do you want from me?" He stood up taller, fur bristling. The shadow flashed again in the corner of his eyes. It circled him, looping faster and faster until it felt like he was going to get swept off his paws and fly to StarClan. But, the shadow stopped, sending him stumbling into a tree. He fell with a gasp. His eyes flew open and he saw eyes. Bright, comprehensive, and-
