- What is a church?
MC was still looking up the hill, admiring the arrangement of flower shops posted in front of the building. The walls were immaculate white, which was usually hard to maintain. The tower hid behind the main structure, flaunting the bell that was currently calling for everyone's attention.
- It's... a school of sorts.
- A school?
- Yes – she tried to disassociate him from the sudden interest-. Nothing fancy like Hogwarts, of course.
- Did you ever attend?
Despite her intent, Omini's expression flourished in delight at the prospect of learning something about her. Perhaps he seemed so taken with the idea because it was muggle-related.
- Sometimes. Yes – she took his hand and tried to physically remove him from that spot -. Are you hungry? Because I am starving! – she chuckled.
- In a minute – he held his ground -. It sounds interesting. Would you like to see it up close?
- No!
Ominis froze at the sudden rejection, especially since she snapped at him as if offended.
- Why?
She sighed.
- Please, think nothing of it. It's just not a place for us wizards.
Although he understood the idea was ridiculous, some part of him was filled with dread. MC's words alluded to the town or—at the very least—the owner of that "school" knowing about their identities.
- Why can't we enter, though?
Her leg shook with anxiety.
- It's filled with doctrines that make us look evil – her voice dropped to a whisper -. The things taught there will teach the townsfolk that we are here to harm them.
Ominis kept quiet but listened carefully.
- If they were to know about us..., well... We would be lucky to escape unscathed.
- That bad, huh? – He scoffed.
- Yes – she held his hand with a little more force -. That's not to say it is not a beautiful place. It's always quiet in there..., and very peaceful. Sometimes, when the storm season starts, most people seek refuge in the church, and they help each other.
- Does it welcome everyone?
She hesitated.
- Yes – the lie rolled out easily-. Except for us, that is! But everyone else is welcome.
- You must have been happy.
Her body shivered in fear, and she had to let go of his hand so Ominis wouldn't notice.
- I am happier now.
She made a point of stomping on the grass to show him she was walking toward the food. Ominis hesitated as well, still hearing the bell behind his back. The sounds were threatening and unforgiving.
- What do you want to eat? – She sang to lull him toward her.
The happiness of her voice eased his worries, but he still pushed his wand higher on his sleeve.
- Everything smells delicious – he ran toward her voice and felt relieved when she grabbed his hand to guide him -. Your pick.
- I haven't tasted one of those turkey legs in years – her mouth watered at the sight of the pieces hanging from the ceiling and the big chunks of meat rolling around over a firepit. Her steps took her there, entranced by the smell -. What do you think?
