Chapter 4 'A plan'

When we were finally back from the maze we got Rachel and Ximena over to the med jacks. Rachel had a broken leg, and had bled a lot so she needed to rest. Ximena had died from the fall, with a broken spine. It was so sad, and to think that Aris had to experience that on his second day.

Later that day we gathered in the forest for a funeral to honor Ximena.

"Hello everyone, you probably already know why we are here, but if you don't then I'll tell you. Ximena...has died" -Sonya

A pause was hanging in the air, the girls began to tear up, Aris too. It was the coldest day we've ever had in the Spring.

"She was a leader, our leader, and she was brave. I don't wanna keep the truth away from you, so I'm gonna tell you what happened" -Sonya

Everyone was crying now, some even sat in the snow next to where we buried her. I got ready to do my part of the speech, it felt too early to do this, but I had to

"A shader attacked, and she fell down on the ice" -Sonya

"Ximena was our leader, and she always will be, she was a friend, like a sister and sometimes even like a mother. Today is not only the fall of a leader, but a rise of our voices, our meaning and what we stand for. If Ximena was here today, she wouldn't want us to stop, she would have wanted us to keep going and find our way out" -Yn

I could feel the tears rolling down my face, but I had to keep going with the speech and stay strong, for the Icers, for Ximena.

"She was helpful, and caring, but that wouldn't stop her from speaking her mind, she always said 'even the strongest cry', she knew that she wasn't coming home today and she also knew we would all be here, crying" -Yn

I forgot everything about what I wanted to say, and I began crying. All of my thoughts were on Ximenas death, I could still see her face and hear her voice screaming for help. I took a few steps away and bumped into Sonya who also was crying and sobbing, I wrapped my arms around her and felt her hugging back.

The funeral was done, the whole spring had taken the day off to sorrow for Ximena. Everyone was too sad to think of a way out, me and Aris sat in one of the huts, it was quiet, until he decided to say something.

"What if we go out and get the shader, maybe see if there's an exit on their map" -Aris

"Ximena just died, no ones going out, and besides it would take way too long to find it, we only have till sundown" -Yn

"Ximena wouldn't want us to stop, you said it yourself, she would've wanted us to find a way" -Aris

There was silence, I didn't want to shut his ideas down but it was risky, and how would any of the other Icers ever agree to going out this close to sundown.

"What about tomorrow?" -Aris

"We can't tomorrow, all of our tracks from today goes away over the night, only the ones in the wall stay" -Yn

"How?" -Aris

"Still asking a lot of questions?" -Yn

"I don-" -Aris

"It's fine, it rains every night, then the water freezes, and we can't see the ones from yesterday" -Sonya

"Well what if we hurry, a lot" -Aris

"It's risky, really risky, and no other Icers would do it, but there is a chance we could make it" -Yn

"What about the shaders?" -Sonya

"They can get frozen to death if they come our way" -Harriet

"Woah, thats tha-" -Aris

"Nah, they're almost immune to the cold, we should take fire with us instead" -Yn

"Good, we have a plan, let's get ready" -Harriet

"And fast, no time to waste" -Sonya

We quickly got ready, we had the gear on and a torch for each of us. We were only four, me, Sonya, Harriet and Aris, it was already his second time in the maze and he had only been here for two days. Rachel obviously couldn't come since her leg hadn't healed yet.
