Chapter 10 'Garden talk'

(Newt's pov)

Not much had happened after Thomas and Minho came back. Had Fry's stew, talked, tried to see if the new girl, Teresa knew anything, she didn't. Gally had placed himself away from everyone together with about 3 other gladers, everytime I or someone else made eye contact with them, they would look at us like we killed their best friend.

We didn't do a bonfire for Teresa like we had done for Thomas and every other glader, it wasn't exactly like it was the first thing on our minds with Alby still with the med-jacks. He was awake, but he wasn't really in a state where he could take back his position as first in command. The serum Teresa had injected him with had really helped, you could still see where he was stung but he wasn't changing anymore.

"Hey Newt, you okay?" -Thomas

"Wha- yeah, yeah I'm fine. Thanks Tommy" -Newt

"Hey um, Newt. How's Alby doing?" - Winston

"He's gotten better, but he still aint the same as before. Yet" -Newt

"Yet?" -Winston

"Clint and Jeff says he'll get better soon, he should just rest a bit for now" -Newt

And when you speak of the sun, it shines. There came Alby with his arm around Clint's shoulder, and Jeff og the other side looking slightly worried.

"Hey, how's everybody been holding up while I was gone?" -Alby

"Alby!" -Chuck

Chuck ran to Alby and gave him a big hug, almost knocked him over.

"Hi buddy, have you finished your little figure yet?" -Alby

"Yeah, not as good as yours though" -Chuck

"So Alby, back to normal now?" -Newt

"Not quite yet, he still needs to rest from time to time" -Jeff

"Oh it's fine, I'll just push on" -Alby

"Not if we have anything to do with it, and that means Newt, you're still in charge" -Clint

"Oh come on, let's have some fun. Who told you to be so strict with this?" -Alby

"Alby, you told them to do this with every patient, including you" -Newt

"Ahh yes, and that is why you are my second in command. Have they been trouble?" -Alby

"No, not the slightest" -Newt

"So umm, Alby, do you remember what you said before we injected you?" -Thomas

Weird. Thomas was obviously talking to him about what Alby said with the "You did this to us" stuff, but Alby just, ignored him? It wasn't like him to do that, especially not with the newer ones. Teresa was also quiet. But she had been like that most of the time since she had gotten here.

It seemed everything was a mess, so I walked out to the garden to take some things off my mind. Even though I spent most of my time and days out there, it still seemed calming, and there was still a lot to be done.

"Hey Newt" -Winston

"Oh hi, I didn't see you, am I disturbing you?" -Newt

"No not at all, if anyone is disturbing anyone it's me, you were here first, and this is sorta your place" -Winston

"My place?" -Newt

"You know, the place you always go, your hangout spot. Everyone knows this is your place" -Winston

"Everyone knows this?" -Newt

"Yeah" -Winston

"I hadn't even noticed myself. Is it that obvious?" -Newt

"Well, hard to say. I noticed after seeing you go out here frustrated like five times, I don't know when the others noticed or if they even have." -Winston

"You said everyone knows?" -Newt

"Alby tells people not to go out here if you're here after an argument or something" -Winston

I was quiet, I knew Alby always would help if needed, of course with a tone that says you should get going and do stuff so you don't become a slacker. I never knew he had a that soft side to him.

"So, why are you out here?" -Winston

He pulled me right out of my thoughts.

"What?" -Newt

"Why are you here again, what's bothering you?" -Winston

"I don't know, Alby is distant, Thomas is a runner, Teresa is a girl" -Newt

"Of course Teresa-" -Winston

"I know that of course she is a girl, but, it's not just that. She is a girl in this maze, full of boys. Like she isn't meant to be here" -Newt

"Well she is here now, so..." -Winston

"I know I know, we can't change it, and she hasn't done any harm so it might not be necessarily bad" -Newt

"And what is it with Alby being distant and Thomas as a runner, you made that choice yourself" -Winston

"Not with Alby!" -Newt

"No, I know. But you chose for Thomas to be a runner, and you were there when he got the serum" -Winston

"I'm sorry Winston, it's just... before Alby got the serum he said some things to Thomas and I don't know what to do with it. He also didn't want to talk to him when he came back, so obviously something's wrong." -Newt

Not in the book but I wanted to give one more sweet moment with them.
