Derek was doing his laundry when he got a phone call from Bailey

"Hello?" He frowned

"Shepherd, I need your butt on a plane to New York now, you need to go get a VIP patient." Bailey told him

"We have a protocol for that, Miranda." Derek sighed

"Yes and that changes now, you need to be at the airport in three hours." Bailey said. "You'll be staying until you can guide his transfer here."

"How long do they expect it will take?" Derek frowned

"A week, max." Bailey sighed

"My surgeries- And I got a family, Bailey." He sighed

"I know Shepherd, I wouldn't ask you if it wasn't super important." Bailey explained

"I know. I'll pack and leave." He sighed and went to find his wife

He started thinking about what should have to be arranged while he'd be away. He had forgotten to get the new medical supplies so he'd ask his brother to pick everything up and drop it off, the girls didn't have any important things on their schedule and Meredith was doing just fine

"Mer?!" He called out for her

"Kitchen!" She yelled back

He hurried over and saw his wife making popsicles

"Hey, are you overheating?" He chuckled and kissed her lips

"The girls asked if i could make some for them, they're playing in the garden." Meredith explained

"Bailey needs me to fly out to New York, might be for an entire week."

"What? A VIP patient?" Meredith frowned

"Yeah, I really need to start packing, I gotta fly out in three hours." Derek muttered

"I'll pack, say goodbye to the girls, they'll miss you." Meredith offered, putting the popsicles in the freezer

"Thanks, I'll come as soon as I can." He nodded

"No worries, I can manage, just go see them." Meredith said and wheeled off to their room

They always kept a suitcase closeby, luckily Derek would spend most of his time in scrubs so she lifted the empty suitcase on the bed and wheeled to his closet, filling it with his favorite clothes, underwear and pajamas. She made sure to grab his toiletbag and his hair products, adding a small note saying she and the girls love him

Honestly she hated if Derek was away, she even hated sleeping alone when he was at the hospital

Over the years she forgot how to sleep on her own and these days she even asked her kids to join most times if she had to sleep on her own, disliking the silence

When she was done she struggled to lift the suitcase of the bed as it was much heavier now but managed to get it on its wheels

She pushed it out which didn't go smooth but then Derek arrived

"Hey sorry, it took a bit longer." He kissed her lips. "Thank you so much."

"I packed everything you need, I'll miss you." She kissed him back

"I'll be back before you know it. I'll call." He promised

"Hmm.. Just be careful, please." Meredith hugged him

Derek quickly scooped her up in his arms to properly hug her and hood her against him. "I always am. I promise."

"Thank you." Meredith muttered, closing her eyes and enjoying the hug until he placed her back down. "Let's get the girls so we can wave."

"Sounds good." Derek smiled and took his suitcase

"Do you want me to drop you off at the airport?" Meredith offered

"No, you and the girls aren't prepared and that way I can just drive home when I come back." He explained to her

The girls said their goodbyes and they all waves as Derek drove off

"Okay, popsicles are in the freezer but that will take a little longer. Let's go play a little more in the garden." Meredith said and started to push herself

"Mommy, I- We-" Grace started. "Daddy promised to help me with my bike.." She muttered

"I can still do it, sweetie. Let's go see what's the issue." Meredith said

She eventually had to help with her daughter's flat tire but it was more exhausting than she had expected

But suddenly her phone started ringing

"Hey Mer!" Her dad called

"Hey dad, how have you and mom been?" She asked them

"We're okay. We just got a call from Derek." He started

"Yeah he's flying to New York for a patient." Meredith nodded, she had a feeling why they called

"He asked if we could pick up your medical equipment so we thought we'd offer to cook for you and the girls." Christopher suggested. "But no pressure, we get it if you don't want to."

"Dad.." Meredith sighed. "Yeah.. I would love to have you over."

"Honey, you know we'd never suggest because we don't trust you, right? We just wanna help out where we can, just because we love our kids."

"I know dad, thank you. I'll tell the girls you're coming over, they'll love it." Meredith smiled softly

"Derek said you mainly needed your catheters and enough materials for your shots and new pain meds?" Christopher checked

"Yes, I'll send the exact list, just let them send the bill to our place." Meredith nodded

"We'll be there in a while, honey." Christopher said and hung up the phone
