Fun in between thing

Kathy sits at the couch and talks to her phone.

Kathy: Ja. Es macht richtig spaß. De Leid san a echt nett... Gestern hob i a Frau aus am eidatschtn Auto zong.  (Bavarian for: Its fun. The people are nice. Yesterday i pulled a woman out of a crashed car.)

Kathy: Ou jetzt san meine Kollegen grad eina kemma.(Now my colegues came in) (Turns the Camera ) Des san Andy mei Betreuerin Sullivan und Maya. (This is Andy, my assigned firefighter and Sullivan and Maya)  (To Andy, Sullivan, Maya) I'm talking to my Grandparents in Germany. I have to take average of being up at 1am it is now 10 am, where they are.

Andy: Hey there.

Maya: Your granddaughter is doing amazing.

Kathy: They dont speak English.

Maya: Oh.

Sullivan in perfect German: Ihre Enkelin macht sich super. Ihr könnt stolz auf sie sein. (You granddaughter does a good job, you can be proud of her)

Kathy: Des hob i ned gewusst. Jedenfois brauchts ihr eich nix denga. I bin in guade Hend. (zu  Sullivan) Tell them i'm not in danger. (Bavarian: I didn't know that. Anyways you don't have to worry. I am in good hands)

Sullivan: keine Sorge, Ihre Enkelin ist sicher bei uns. Wir passen schon auf sie auf aber das macht sie selber schon ganz gut. (Don't worry your granddaughter is save with us, we take care of her, but she does a very good job herself)

Kathy: Schauts, I muas jetzt aufleng. Schena Dog. Pfiad eich. Ja... Pfia di.. Servus (see now i have to hang up. Have a nice day. Bye.)

Andy: Bye ?

Kathy hangs up: Wia ko des sei, das i sent zwoa monat  do arbat aber ned gewusst hob, dass du foi guad deutsch kost. (Bavarian: how is it possible that i worked here for two months and didn't know you speak german)

Sullivan: Was? Warte nochmal. Ich versteh deinen Dialekt nicht ganz. (Wait. can you say that again, i don't understand your dialect?)

Kathy: How is it possible that I've worked here for 2 Months not knowing you speak German?

Sullivan: I don't know. I just find it quite funny that you choose to translate your dialekt into englisch rather than High German.

Andy: Can anyone enlighten us what you where talking about at the call?

Kathy: Oh my grandparents are really scared, now that i' m at FD. Understandable They lost their son in a fire. And his wife and daughter then moved across the world. I try to call them once a week telling them fun things, happy things and just the nice stuff so they aren't as scared. But with time difference and my shifts it's sometimes hard to find time.

Maya: I totally understand your Grandparents. Its nice that you are doing that.

Andy:Will you see them some time soon?

Kathy : Yeah they are coming in May next year i think. Between Easter and Pentecost. It's cheaper outside of the School breaks.

Andy: Your Summer break starts at Pentecost?

Kathy: No. We have very different holidays. In bavaria ,one part of Germany, all breaks are around catholic Holidays. So We have one week at the Start of November for All Hallows

Andy: You get a halloween break ?

Kathy: No and at least where I lived noone celebrates Halloween.  Its avery american thing.

Maya: I didn't know that.

Kathy: Then we get break from December 24th to January 6th. Thats where the kids from one village meet, group up, dress as the three kings, Stars and Sheparts and go from house to house. They sing, und collect money for a good cause und they get sweets. I loved doing that.

Maya: That basically like Halloween.

Kathy: Yeah but Is organized und every house only gets one visit and there is a good cause.

Sullivan: That so much more efficient than Halloween.

Kathy: A very german thing. Yeah and then we get a week around ash Wednesday and two around easter und then again two starting with pentecost . And these are at a different time each year. Because Easter is different each year.

Maya: Easter is different each year?

Kathy: Yeah. Its the first full moon in spring, so depending when the full moon is it changes.

Andy: I did know that.

Maya: I didnt. I never really thought about it though. I didn't grow up religious

Kathy: and last we have six weeks in summer. Which is all of August and up until 15th of September.

Maya: We have three months of Summer.

Kathy: Yeah guess how confused I was, watching american tv shows before I knew that. They do so much that is not possible to achieve in 6 weeks. Everything made so much more sense since I found out you have 3 Months.

They chill a little

An: Kathy like me speaks a german dialect, bavarian. In Germany we have lots and lots of different dialects. Bavarian for example has a little bid different grammar than the official high German, so it is hard to understand for those who aren't used to it.
