A Dream

I dreamt of white dresses too narrow for my hips
And long dining tables at a ceremony
Full of faces with eyes that don't smile
As I clutched heliotrope and yarrow blooms

The sun hung over, burning gazes down at me
Blinding the path, I marched onward still
Curling vines on the ground broke my heels
The hoops of my skirt fighting me each step

But as the sky bled into amethyst and ember,
So did the garish white gown into gentle lilac
As my eyes fell upon you, no more gazes could burn me,
And we walked on sandy shores hand-in-hand

With petals of my bouquet filling the waves
You let down my hair and warmed my soul
And there, alone, we said all that needed saying
And your fingers brushed my hips as you kissed me
