chapter five
a disco ball
AS IVY RECLINED ON THE SOFT GRASS OF THE GARDEN, she watched the clouds drift lazily across the sky, their ever-changing shapes a source of fleeting entertainment. Beside her, Renata stood sentinel, her posture rigid and unwavering as she maintained her vigil over Ivy.
Boredom gnawed at Ivy's senses, a restless energy stirring within her as she longed for something to break the monotony of the day. She shifted uncomfortably, the lush greenery of the garden offering little solace in the face of her ennui.
Ivy had been at the castle for a few days now. She had only seen Aro and Renata whom Aro told her to stay with whenever she left her room.
Her gaze drifted upwards to the expanse of sky stretched out before her. Wisps of clouds danced lazily across the azure canvas, their shapes shifting and morphing with each passing moment.
"There," Ivy exclaimed, her finger tracing the outline of a fluffy cumulus cloud. "That one looks like a dragon." She could see from the corner of her eye that she looked up to what she was pointing at. "Or white cotton candy."
"Don't all clouds look like cotton candy?" the woman commented and Ivy smiled when she finally responded to her. For the past twenty minutes, Ivy had spoken and tried to start a conversation with the vampire but this whole time she hadn't responded to her.
Ivy grinned, a sense of childlike wonder washing over her as she watched the cloud drift by. "Do you think they taste like one? You know, sometimes you can see pink clouds? I think they would taste more sweet."
"I think they would taste like nothing," Renata responded and even a bigger smile broke into Ivy's lips.
"Renata," Ivy called out, her voice tinged with a hint of sorrow. "Do you get tired of standing there?"
Renata turned to face Ivy, her expression impassive as she regarded her charge with an unwavering gaze. "My duty is to protect you, my lady," she replied evenly. "I do not tire."
"Doesn't it get boring?"
"No, my lady," Renata responded.
"Aren't you a sunshine," Ivy chuckled at her short responses. "Well, I'm bored. When is Aro done with his meeting?"
"Not sure, my lady," she replied. Ivy dramatically sighed.
As Ivy observed the delicate butterfly fluttering near her, a sense of wonder washed over her. Its fragile wings, painted with vibrant hues of blue and orange, seemed to dance on the breeze with a grace that captivated her.
But as the butterfly alighted upon her outstretched hand, her fascination quickly turned to horror. With a shudder, she watched as its delicate movements grew sluggish, its once vibrant colors fading to a dull gray. And then, with a final, feeble twitch, the butterfly lay still, its life extinguished in an instant. She had forgotten she wasn't wearing her gloves anymore.
