It had been a quiet day at the field hospital I was stationed at, though I'd never say it out loud. We never speak the Q word out loud in the medical field, it's a superstition and we all believed the Q word had nasty power. Little did I know just thinking about "quiet" today was enough for all hell to break loose.
I was in rotation in the emergency bay this week and it had been chaos. The enemy had been moving in on our hospital and as a result we've had less beds open. It wasn't looking good. I let out a breath I'd been holding, I had one final week in field before my deployment was over and I was headed back home.i just had to get through the next few days.
I started humming to myself as I made my rounds, checking on the patients we had in the bay. We only had three beds available, the enemy was dwindling our units, I swear we had more soldiers in the hospital than in the field. I was finishing hooking up a new IV bag, basically running on autopilot at this point.
"Siren!" Lukas shouts as he busts through the entrance, breaking me out of my own trance. He had his hands pressed tightly against a wounded soldiers shoulder, while two other medics carried the stretcher. I approached quickly, guiding the field team to the nearest open bed. "GSW to the shoulder."
I immediately sprung into action, gathering the necessary equipment and supplies I would need. In a field hospital, gunshot wounds were common, it felt like second nature after serving two year long tours. I quickly filled a syringe and injected local anesthetic into the soldiers shoulder. "Bullet went clean through," I stated, prepping to stitch him up. "I'll get him stitched up."
It was in that moment that hell started to break loose. I heard more field medics running in with stretchers, more hospital medics rushing to assess the situation. Soldiers were screaming in pain, medics were yelling across the bay to each other, it got loud and overwhelming fast. "Lukas, what the hell is happening out there?" I glanced at the chaos behind me quickly.
Lukas grimaced, "It's not looking good out there."
"Thanks captain obvious, I would've never guessed," I replied with an eye roll. I knew it was bad out there, I knew even better that our situation would continue to get worse.
He winked playfully, "You're welcome Sergeant Sarcasm." He helped me rotate the injured soldier so I had better access to the bullets exit the puns before running off to take care of other injured soldiers.
I glanced up, assessing the chaos around me. All 20 beds were full, there were four soldiers strapped to stretchers on the floor. My unit was scrambling to stabilize as many patients as possible. I took a deep breath and continued stitching up my soldier. He was out of it, likely from blood loss, but he'd live. Amongst the chaos, no one heard the approaching helicopter until it was too late.
Suddenly, enemy soldiers burst into our bay, guns at the ready. "Get down!" I screamed as the soldiers open fired into the bay. I threw myself to the floor behind my patients bed, ya king him to the floor with me. I swiftly grabbed his M4, thankfully still clipped to his gear. I was a decent shot during basic training, I was more than capable of defending myself in the field when I was on med evac rotation. But to be within the hospital, taking cover and fire, was different. Peaking out from behind the bed, I took out two of the enemy soldiers.
My comrades were quickly fighting back, we were all trained for this, never did we expect for it to happen though. I watched as Lukas took a shot to the chest, and I stifled a scream. I saw red. I pulled a sniper off a fallen soldier strapped to a stretcher and started moving towards the back wall of our hardshell tent. I had once accepted a dare to climb into the rafters in my first deployment so I knew they could support my weight, so I did just that, climbed into the rafters. I felt a bullet graze my thigh as I climbed, but I bit back the pain, I was not going to let that stop me. I settled quickly, taking aim, and killing off the remaining enemy soldiers.
