Chapter 72

"That went better than expected," Hawks said mildly as he leaned on the door. "But I still get the impression that Eraserhead doesn't like me."

You kept your eyes to his face as he spoke. And doubly so as you responded. "Oh I wonder why."

Hawks smiled mischievously for a moment before letting a more serene expression dominate his features. "I suppose I could take his attitude as a compliment. He's worried I'll try to snatch you away."

You stayed quiet at that. You couldn't dispute the fact that such a thought might have occurred to Aizawa. Hawks was probably going to be a hot button for a while.

In another timeline, one where the doctor's lie hadn't pried you apart from the winged hero, you wouldn't have allowed your relationship with Aizawa to have grown into what it was. Which probably would have meant he'd have been left to deal with the drug in his system by himself after you'd removed what you could. You wouldn't have felt free enough to offer him a hand which led to the cure if your hypothesis was right. And, even if you had figured out what you just had, there was a very good chance Aizawa's wouldn't have recovered as smoothly anyway.

Hawks moved away from the door and closer to you as you continued to think about the repercussions of that.

If the doctor hadn't lied to you, you'd have been with Hawks. But Aizawa would have been injured at the least. And that was assuming you'd still been in Japan to have helped pull the drug out before it was fully absorbed by his body.

And if you weren't in Japan, not only would Aizawa have fallen but there was still a chance Hawks could have been shot too. He said that someone that hadn't trusted him, someone you'd gotten the feeling he was trying to fool, had shot him up. The only difference is that he might not have thought to extract it as quickly. He could have tried to see it through on his own. Given the information you'd started to piece together that would have been very bad. If Hawks couldn't calm down and shake it off, things could still be pretty bad. Stressing out the heart over and over wasn't exactly a good thing.

You looked slightly up in surprise as Hawks raised your chin up. You blinked, coming back to the reality in front of you as you realized with sudden morbid clarity that echoed a thought in your head.

The morality of this world limits your ability to save them, doesn't it?

"I was starting to feel a little exposed," Hawks' smirk was firmly in place as you looked directly at him. "What's going on in that head of yours?"

You shifted a little as you spoke quietly but honestly. "I want to save you."

"That's cute but I am a pro-Hero you know. I'm supposed to do the savings around here."

Slowly you moved your hand to his chest. You gave him plenty of time to back up or push your hand away in case he didn't want to be touched. Hawks stayed still as you pressed your palm flat against where his heart pounded. You could feel the breast muscle tighten and the shiver that spread through his body even at such a simple thing. His skin was still hot to the touch too. And from the way he'd shifted you got the feeling he was still highly reactive in different ways.

Hawks' hand drifted from your chin as he did his best to hold still. You were glad for that as his self control let you take stock of the situation.

"I'm with Aizawa," you spoke quietly.

"So you keep telling me."

You pushed with the hand you still had on him. Hawks only swayed with the motion and you felt even that was a bit much. You'd only pressed on him to try and convey that you wanted him to be quiet while you figured out how to express your full thought.
