Take care of it

The coldness explodes across my body as my back hits the concrete with a strong gasp coming from deep within my chest, the sweat that drops from my forehead to the floor sending chills down my entire spine. I do not know how long it's been, or how long I've been running but I'm sure I've put more distance than necessary between me, the group, and the infected in between.

I didn't look back, I didn't even look as they screamed my name, I just ran and the infected followed. I risked myself again, for a group that I hardly know and I'm starting to confuse myself. maybe it's just the guilt from Rina playing on my mind, the feeling of needing to protect has only grown stronger since what had happened to her and despite it only being three days since, it feels like a lifetime ago. I've done and felt so much to fill a lifetime and we are hardly even out of the woods. I can't keep getting stuck in my head like this.

Slowly, I peak out the side of the building in the very direction I came from, the group of infected wander across the street in search of something new and breathing, something to feed on now that I've disappeared from their hunger-filled sights. As before, I think they are blind which isn't too much of an out of box theory as they seem to forget the purpose of the chase as soon as you are out of sight, as long as you are silent and safe distance they don't seem to bother. I can't quite remember the conversation the group had just days ago, I only remember stay quiet and keep distance.

But if I had to guess it would be the sense of smell that they rely on, which is just as interesting as it is confusing. I watch on. they wonder until they begin to separate, though never wandering too far from their hoard. to my left is another street that leads down to a slight hill, over the other side, is a small row of shops and what seems to be a small block of apartments. To my right is a straight street leading towards the neighbourhood we previously pointed out.

I don't know if they even made it there. I can only hope they did, and I have to try my luck.

Swiftly, I run across the opening towards the street to hopeful freedom, my footsteps echo into the silence but I get across unnoticed regardless. I follow the street down, keeping my eyes and ears peeled from anything that may approach but I'm met with silence and the pitch blackness of the night before me. though, as the buildings start to get few and far between, my view of the sky becomes clearer.

all electrics must have gone out now as there is no electrical pollution shrouding the view of the stars above. it's a clear night with no sign of any clouds which gives me hope that we won't have any rain for the next couple of days at least, now most likely being on foot, rain would just top the past couple of days off. though, it would offer us a resource to water should we run out of bottled water.

we should reach the camp before then, regardless of how we end up when we get there we can only hope for the best, however unlikely it may be. for now, ill soak in what could be my last gaze up at the stars as my heart aches in my heaving chest.
