What would it be like in a world where the killing game went differently?
What would it be like if different people lived and different people died?
What would it be like...if this story...had an entirely different hero.
A rewrite of the game Super...
"It's not that simple," Nagito pointed out, his expression a strange amalgamation of a frustrated frown and a confident smirk. "If this is true, then our pool of suspects isn't limited to just those in the hospital. In fact, it means that anyone from the motel group—Sonia, Gundham, Akane, Chiaki, and, of course, myself—could have committed the crime. All they had to do was slip into the hospital for a brief moment, knock Mikan unconscious, inject her with the syringe, and then go about their business as if nothing happened. No one would have suspected a thing."
A tense silence followed. The investigation had taken a sharp turn, and now...
The list of suspects had just expanded dramatically.
...
"Not necessarily."
Peko's sharp voice silenced him. All eyes turned to her as she folded her arms, her expression cool and calculated.
"What do you mean, 'not necessarily'?" Nagito asked.
"The theory makes sense at first glance," Peko clarified, "but when you actually consider the positioning and timing, it falls apart."
"What do you mean?" Hajime asked.
"Mahiru was waiting in the hospital for Mikan, right? Because Mikan told her to hang back so Hiyoko could apologize to her." Peko looked toward Hiyoko as she said this. "Roughly how long were you waiting to hear back from Mikan before you went downstairs and discovered Mahiru's body?"
"Well, I was waiting for around an hour myself," Hiyoko told her. "So she had to have been waiting at least that long, too."
"That makes sense..." Nekomaru nodded. "Assuming Mahiru and Mikan were assaulted around the same time..."
"Then think about it," Peko continued. "Mahiru was most likely in the hospital lobby all that time. If she was loitering in the hallway, she would have seen her assailant coming. But if she really was in the lobby, she would have noticed if anyone entered or left the building. They'd have to walk past her...unless they climbed out the window, but...there's no proof of that happening. Besides, the drop is rather uncomfortable."
"Well, there's that, and the fact that the windows don't even open in the first place," Hiyoko swiftly added. "So even if you thought you could try the drop, you physically wouldn't be able to."
"That...is true," Sonia admitted. "She would have been right by the entrance. If anyone from the motel group had come in, she would have seen them."
"But if anyone in the hospital came out, she woulda seen 'em too!" Akane furrowed her brow. "And if that's the case, how the hell did she end up dead in the hallway?"
The answer to how Mahiru ended up in the hallway...This should be pretty clear if you were at the scene...
