"Are...ARE YOU KIDDING MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!??" Akane screamed, her face contorted in desperation.
"No, no, no, no, no!" Ibuki whimpered, shaking her head violently, her hands clamped over her ears. "That doesn't make ANY SENSE! It doesn't-! It can't-!"
"But...WHY!?" Even Peko looked completely disbelieving, her stoic demeanor irreparably shattered by the reality. "If she was the one responsible for Mahiru's wound, why would she use a knife from the restaurant instead of just using the medical tools available in the hospital!?"
"That's a good question," Hajime admitted. "Maybe she thought a scalpel wouldn't be enough? Or maybe she wanted to make sure she had something she could easily get rid of later."
"Or...maybe she wanted to make it look like someone from the motel did it?" Chiaki's gaze flickered downward. "We never actually told her that we weren't getting food from the hospital, after all."
"She did try to frame Hiyoko, after all," Hajime muttered. "She probably planned on keeping that as a backup. If we hadn't brought up the possibility that she might have killed herself early on in the trial, we might have fallen for it..."
"Yeah, no kidding." Hiyoko scowled.
"With all that said, before we make our final judgment," Nagito piped up, his voice smooth but laced with intrigue, "there's still one last thing I can't quite wrap my head around."
"A-And..." Sonia asked, her voice shaking with horror, "what might that be?"
"We know that Mikan had the means," he continued. "But the question remains...how did she get close enough to Mahiru without being seen? There's no way Mahiru would've just let her walk up and stab her in the back. So how did she manage to stay out of sight?"
"E-Exactly!" Akane spat. "There was nowhere to hide! No way she could've pulled it off, even if she tried!"
"Oh, come on," Hiyoko rolled her eyes, as defiant as ever. "If you actually think about it, the answer's obvious!"
"Is that so...?" Nagito said, in that sort of 'I'm-on-purposefully-leading-you-on' kind of way.
Hiyoko scowled at him but knew she had to bite the bullet.
