Amidst all the chaos and emotional turmoil on the island, to be honest, most of the group had almost forgotten that Nagito wasn't around.
It was strange. It was so easy to forget about him when he wasn't on the scene, despite all the emotional—and sometimes even physical—turmoil he had put them through. Now that he was gone, things were starting to feel peaceful.
That wasn't to say Nagito was the biggest reason things had been so bad on Jabberwock Island. But not having him around was secretly very nice. Not that any of the students would admit that, despite their previous vocal rejection of him.
Over the past few days since he'd been gone, Nagito had been investigating the funhouse, just as he had promised. He'd completely lost track of time, since there were no windows in the building, but he'd been trying to pace himself and get rest when he needed it.
Nagito paced the red-tinged room, his eyes flicking from wall to wall, tracing the contours of the architecture.
"Strawberry walls, strawberry elevator...even the damn carpet smells like artificial fruit," he muttered. "There's definitely a pattern here. Well, I suppose that's stating the blatantly obvious..."
He stopped in front of the elevator doors, staring at the strawberry emblem printed above them.
"This place...it's symmetrical. Or at least, it wants us to think it is."
He stepped into the elevator and pressed the only button. The machine hummed softly, descending.
"No other buttons. No emergency stop. Just a single destination. Whoever built this wants control over where we go..."
He paused for a moment, then smacked himself in the head.
"What am I saying this out loud for!? I'm thinking about things that shouldn't matter!" he grumbled. "Ugh, this place is driving me CRAZY!"
The elevator doors opened to reveal the circular tower room, with the massive strawberry door on one side.
"So this is the tower they mentioned..." Nagito whispered, running a hand along the wall. "No windows. No ventilation. The sound insulation is too good...can't even hear the elevator once it closes. It's like being in a soundproof box."
He looked up at the checker-patterned ceiling.
"If I had to guess...the tower rotates."
Nagito stepped into the center of the room and spun slowly in place.
"The door behind me was the elevator. But when I was in Grape House...wasn't the elevator door on the opposite side of the tower?" he grinned. "So if both doors are real, and the tower rotates to connect to different sides depending on which elevator you use...That's it. The tower doesn't move up or down—it turns horizontally."
Nagito examined the wall with the hexagonal picture frames.
"The layout repeats. Every hallway is lined with pictures of the students. Strawberry House has everyone—even me. The third floor has the tower, the second has the standard rooms, and the first...Only the elevator and that final door..."
His brow furrowed as he glanced at the elevator shaft.
"But if the elevator only moves vertically...how do we connect to Grape House?"
He looked up at the ceiling, then his face slowly twisted into a smile.
"We don't need stairs. The elevator must go through the tower and exit on the other side. But it only opens one way at a time."
