Today was the day I've been waiting for my entire life. The way I envisioned my dream wedding as a kid, was the exact same way that Jenna helped me create it. She made sure I had everything I could've wished for. She got my favorite flowers to decorate the tables inside the party tent, my favorite music, booked my favorite band, and more.
And here I was, my stylist helping to get my wedding dress tailored on correctly. I'd be walking down the aisle in t-minus one hour. Billie and Liv were in the dressing room with me.
They were here as bridesmaid and officiator of the wedding, but also for moral support cause I was panicking a little.
"What if I trip and fall while walking down the aisle?" I exhaled shakily, eyeing my figure in the mirror. "Does this dress make me look fat? What if I get cake all over it? Do you think Juno needs a diaper change? Or to be fed? Maybe I should go do that."
Billie grabbed my face gently. "Breathe, babe, breathe. Juno is with her grandma Natalie, she is perfectly okay. Stop stressing, alright?"
"I can't." I looked at her nervously. "I'm just worried something might happen."
"Well Jenna made sure everything was okay." Liv reassured me of my fiancée's actions. She grabbed my hands. "This is the biggest day of your life. The one you've been planning since you learned to write your own name."
I smiled a little, taking deep breaths by the minute.
"Jenna got everything you could've ever wanted for this wedding. God forbid she'll ever let anything happen during or to it. Okay?"
"Okay." I slowly nodded. "Thanks, guys, I needed that."
They both smiled at me. "I'll go check on Jenna." Billie announced and shuffled her way through the room to leave. Liv watched my facial expressions carefully as I still bit down a little shyly on my bottom lip.
"Do you remember the fake wedding we had as kids?" She sat down in the chair, catching my attention. "You were the bride and Billie was your hubby." We both laughed. "You walked down wearing your most beautiful dress. Which happened to be the church dress that your mom would make you wear. But, my gosh, you always looked amazing in everything you wore." Liv smiled softly up at me. "This is no different. I look at you now and I'm in shock. You're beautiful, Y/N/N. Inside and out. Billie sees it. I see it. And Jenna always has."
A small tear escaped my eye. Olivia wiped it away lightly, cradling my face. "You're getting married to the dream girl you've always wanted in life."
I chuckled, ducking my head down but nodding in agreement.
"Let's see that beautiful smile." Liv whispered. I looked back up at her and smiled genuinely. "There she is! Gorgeous!"
I laughed and rolled my eyes playfully. "Thank you, Livie. I love you."
"I love you more. My best friend." She hugged me, giving me reassuring pats to my back.
My stylist arose from the floor. "All done, Miss L/N."
"Actually, it's Mrs. Ortega now." Olivia corrected her with a smile, winking my way.
"Thank you, Barbara." I thanked my stylist on her way out. I turned to see myself in the mirror. I looked beautiful. It was probably the first time in a long time that I've felt this way. I could see myself through my own eyes now and say, wow I am gorgeous.
Liv held my hand, gushing about the marvelous dress. All I could think about was Jenna now. The way she'll look in her suit, how big her smile may be, the dimples on her face being prominent, her hair perfectly done.
And then my little girl. Juno, oh sweet Juno, she'll be the cutest flower girl ever. She's walking, growing up. Her little waddle is so adorable.
The door creaked open, revealing my mom. She gasped at the sight of me. Olivia smiled at me and made her way out to give my mom and I some privacy.
"Sweetheart." She said with happy tears. "You look amazing. You know, your brothers and sister are here."
I raised my brows in surprise. "I uh I haven't seen them in years."
"They couldn't miss your wedding, baby girl." Mom coaxed softly, the proudest look in her eyes. "They're sitting on your side."
"And dad?" I asked. Her eyes drifted away. "I hate everything he did, even who he is as a person, but that's still my dad. At some point in my life, he was a good dad to me. Did he come?"
Mom was quiet. "No, honey, I'm sorry. I talked to him about it. There was no way he would've come."
I felt a sting in my heart. The only good moment I've ever had with my dad was when I was five years old. I was sick, he kept me home from school. Mom was working. To cheer me up, he took me out for ice cream, bought me a new stuffed animal to sleep with that night, and even made my favorite dinner which was mac and cheese with hot dogs.
From there, he started drinking and became a bad man. I don't even remember the last time he smiled at me. Sometimes, I just wish I could have my dad back. My real dad. Not the one who abused us, insulted us, drank his life away, or raped me.
I want the dad who made us dinners, sang in the car with me, had a milkshake chugging race on Sunday's, mowed the lawn every month so we could play games, and danced with my mom in the kitchen.
That's the dad I missed. And I'll never get him back.
"I know it's hard, love. But it's probably for the best." Mom whispered softly and weakly, cupping my face. I nodded in agreement. A feeble nod.
"You're right. But, I still wish he wasn't bad."
Her face softened and she leaned up to kiss my forehead. The same way she did when she tucked me into bed. "We can't change that, but I am always here for you. I could never miss your big day, hon."
"Thanks, mom." I sniffled, hugging my mom tightly. "You're the best."
"Just trying to make up for lost time."
I pulled back to see the clock ticking down to the final two minutes left until I had to walk down the aisle. I let out a deep breath, smiling at my mom. "Ready?"
"To give you away? I never am." Mom wiped her tears away with a sad smile. "But, I know you're in the best hands."
I kissed my mom's cheek, looping my arm through hers.
Here we go.
